Add ability to name locations to the Automatic Pro

Another great feature that was lost in the transition to the Automatic Pro was the ability to add a custom name to a location. This is really helpful in viewing the generated trip data. Frequent locations can display things like, "Home", "Office", "School", "Gym" rather than simply a cryptic general address. Having location names makes the experience much more relevant and personal. Please consider bringing this feature back to the Automatic Pro.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Be great if we could label frequent destinations (ie. work).

Is there a way to give frequent destinations labels? It would make reviewing trips a lot easier?

You really could name your destinations with a meaningful name in the old Automatic adapter?! When I saw that missing in my new Pro, I thought they simply haven't figured it out how to do that and that it was lame. Now I think it's plain mean. Really not sure what the app on my iPhone is supposed to do. Useless.

This should be a priority, it was an awesome feature pre=Pro!

Thanks for chiming in, Dave. I've shared your feedback with the Product team.

Yes, wanting this also. I share my trip details often on social media. I'd rather have 'home' or 'work' show up again like older adapter, than my actual address.

Very good point, Derek.

Yes, renaming a location is very important, especially in a crowded area as locations are frequently simply wrong (but close) so the start and stops names are functionally gibberish.  (Stop & Shop is listed as 2-62 Old Stage Road, which is an access road for trucks, not the road to access the store. More relevant would be to rename the location Stop & Shop!).  And it has my house number as 2-4 Briarwood.  It's actually 31 Briarwood, so it would be nice to rename it simply "home."

Please move to top of priority list.  Rest of app is fine!

This is a much-needed feature for multiple reasons. Here are a couple of mine:

  • Locations addresses are frequently either off by a street number or two, or identified as a different nearby street. However, GPS accuracy is generally within 15 meters, so naming an address would help reduce the confusion of seeing multiple nearby addresses for a single actual destination.
  • While driving around to customer sites on service visits, the variance in addresses significantly increases the complexity of identifying locations. Naming locations would greatly help with this as well.

It is a shame that this feature was "lost" with the new version of the app for the Automatic Pro, but I am hopeful that the Automatic team will soon re-add this incredibly helpful feature. Other mileage tracking apps now offer auto-naming and renaming destinations, so this is also becoming important as a competitive feature.

Thank you!

Ah! Good, you found this on your own. I just replied to your question in the other topic and pointed you to this post. :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Link addresses to names.

It would be great if we could add a friendly name to addresses to quickly recognize destinations in the log. Ideally this info could be pulled from Google or my contacts, but I would be happy with just a simple reference created on the fly.

I very recently purchased the Automatic Pro adapter.  I have used other products and this feature is a must-have for me.

I frequently drive to same/different locations that need to be labeled and logged for work.  I am still using another product that does this and I am hoping I can fully switch to Automatic Pro for my needs.

I am hoping this can be done, otherwise, your product won't be an easy transition or useful for me.

Thanks for your consideration!

I'm also pretty disappointed to see this feature was lost in the "upgrade" from the old Automatic to new Automatic Pro but given the many months since it was requested I'm not optimistic that it will be brought back.

If you bring back the adding of names to locations, I am hoping this will bring back the ability to combine legs of trips into one trip.  This seems like a very wanted feature from the past.

Why are we voting on this? This was a feature on the old Automatic it should be standard for the Pro, why did I get rid of my old Automatic and upgrade to the "pro" version only to lose features? Nothing that ever claims to be a "pro" version of something else should have less features, that doesn't even make sense? How has this been up for 8 months and still not added to the software? It's not even a complicated thing to add! Just change the address line to editable text and save the values for address's so if they ever reappear they automatically show the editable text

As stated in that post:
"If there's a feature or some functionality you dearly miss from the original Automatic experience, please add it here as a new "Idea" topic or see if someone else already has in which case you can add your vote and your thoughts there. We don't guarantee that requests shared with us will definitely be fulfilled, but we do use the feedback in this community as an important data point in our considerations and decisions."

There are a lot of varying requests from users as well as needs that arise from other sources that have to be considered and juggled. We are a small team and can only do so much so quickly. We don't make promises about what we'll build or when we'll build it because we never know what curve balls can come at us that may cause one thing to be put on hold and something else to take priority. As you can see in that post, we've already added a few new features that existed in some form in the original app. We've also added several other brand new pieces of functionality.

To clearly set expectations, please understand that the date that an idea is shared here in this community should not imply that a clock has started on producing a specific result. It's also important to understand that our system is a complex one in an ecosystem that includes mobile apps, server infrastructure, APIs, firmware and hardware. Nothing is as simple to execute as one might think.

I'd like to see the label feature return.  I'd also like to be able to replace an address range with a specific address.  As it is, when I park in my driveway, Automatic says I'm somewhere along roughly 2 miles of my street.

Hi Mark. You may want to email help@automatic.com to chat about that with Tech Support. It's typical for the location to be off by a few address numbers as it's nearly impossible to get the GPS point as precise as your exact address unless you just get lucky. But if it's consistently two miles off that sounds like something else is going on for you with the GPS access points.

Add my name to the list of people who would greatly benefit from the ability to label oft visited locations.  I use another App that tracks my mileage via my phone, and this is a basic feature on that app.  I would like to switch over completely from them to Automatic.  I was shocked when I found out this wasn't a feature.  Thanks!

Thanks for the vote davidlanza! We appreciate the input!
I'm very disappointed with this new version of the mobile app; why is the ability to tag a custom name missing? I used this all the time on the classic version and to be honest I "expected" it to be in the new version.

Add my name to the list, too.  The GPS location identification seems to be better, but some are useless.  For example the local Stop & Shop parking lot is on Stage Road and that is how Automatic identifies the stop.  It would be nice to clarify that I was actually at the supermarket rather than Stage Road that is not marked as such and no one would ever know was the supermarket.

Would really like to be able to do this. Automatic Pro thinks I live at the wrong address, so it would be nice to say "this is my Home address" and then Automatic could figure out "if I'm near here, and parked, I'm probably "Home"".

Thanks!

Very welcome. It's actually kind of a pain given I just did a smartthings integration, and it doesn't think my car is at home because Automatic thinks I'm parked next door. =/

Clearly they have no intention of doing this. They know it’s a desired feature and yet they continue to give lip service stating what a great idea it is. It’s been over a year likely more without any movement. Poorly run company? Or extremely difficult feature to add back? We may never know.

Derek, Is there an ETA for this feature?  Every stop I make is "unknown", which isn't useful at all.  I'd at least like to see "home" and "work".

Hi Eric,

The issue you are having is unrelated. You are outside of the US and our map provider does't provide address information for locations outside of the US, unfortunately.

Hi Derrick: Outside Eric's issue, do we have any idea when we might be able to name places? I just bought my Automatic Pro a few weeks ago and was disappointed this was not possible.

Bringing this much needed feature back into focus. I’m a new Automatic Pro user with two vehicles in the household. I cannot believe location tagging/naming isn’t included.
