Adding a car that is already in another person's account

We have 2 Pro adapters (and use iOS devices), one with my wife’s account and a Nissan Versa, one with my account and a Hyundai Sonata. We then bought a new car, a Pathfinder and our plan was to sell her car, the Versa, and keep my car, the Sonata. So I took the Pro adapter from the Versa and placed it in the Pathfinder. I added it to my account and no issues here, it all worked wonderfully. After a couple weeks we made the decision to sell the Sonata instead and keep the Versa, so I took the Pro adapter from the Sonata and placed it on the Versa, and here is where I ran into trouble.

When the Pro adapter identifies the car I get an error that the car is already in another person's account, and the app suggests me that I should ask them to log in to my phone.

Now, for us it's not a big deal. I can fix it right now by adding the car back to her account and it should work correctly, but I think that this is something to look into. I just sold my Sonata, and it seems that if the new owner buys an Automatic Pro adapter and tries to add his new car it will most likely give him the same error I got, and I guess there is not a lot he can do right?

And I know, we should have both cars in the same account to make it easier. The only reason I didn’t do it was that in case of an accident I wanted the crash alert to call her if it happened on her car and me if it happened on my car. I can set different phone numbers but both would say my name for the emergency contact instead of the car's primary driver's name. I know, not a huge deal but I wanted to keep things clean.

Anyway, there are two situations here:
1. Transferring a car to a different account seems to be an issue, from looking at the forum it seems support needs to do it, but if the new owner of my Sonata needs it, will I lose all the data I have in my account?

2. It would be awesome if I could set not only a specific number for emergencies for each car, but also a name. This is a nice to have since in an accident I can always tell them who I really am, unless I have a concussion and have no idea of my name... O_O

Hi jjgalvez,

That is all correct, and in response to your two questions:

1. If the new owner of the Sonata wants to install an Automatic Pro adapter, we would contact you to let you know that we are going to remove the vehicle, and then you could export all of the data from the Sonata to a .CSV using the Web Dashboard so you would still have it, just not in the app or Web Dashboard.

2. Currently the name of the Primary Driver is the owner of the Automatic account, which is why it can't be changed. As you mentioned, you can have the correct phone number, which generally speaking is more important. This could change at some point, but it's not something we're working on right now.
