We are happy to announce that version 0.3 has been released to the Beta channel. The Android private beta is still closed for the moment but we expect to accept new member requests next week in the Android Beta Google Group.

The changes in this version are:

  • Firmware update! The app will now keep the Link updated to the latest firmware in the background. No manual intervention required.
  • Improved Bluetooth connectivity. We believe you should see a clear difference in this new version. Especially after the Link has been updated to the latest firmware version. [ 0.8.29 ]
  • Fixed some of those nasty crashes.
Coming soon: Display of current app and firmware version in the footer of the User Settings page and ability to edit User Settings, among other things.

Thank you for your support. We know the app is still buggy but we are working very hard to make our Android app experience a delight. Also rest assured that we are working to update all the missing features from the iOS app as soon as we can.

To keep up to date on latest app and firmware versions, follow this topic.

Nexus 5 support yet?

Is it the Nexus 5 hardware or software support that is lacking?

It's a Bluetooth discovery issue. The latest updates to the app and firmware may address it. Did you ever have luck getting through setup? The trick with firmware is that you need to successfully complete setup and then drive for a while for the firmware to update. However, if you can't get through setup *because* of the firmware issue, it's a bit of a catch 22. Not an unsolvable one, but also not a simple fix.

Would I be able to update my Links firmware using an iPhone to bypass this issue? I have both. iPhone built into my truck and an Android Phone I take with me.

Yes! That is the simplest of the options you have before you which is great.

So if you go through setup with your iPhone and then take about a 30 minute or so drive, it should update. Make sure that if your Android is with you, you are logged out of the Automatic app in your Android and shut the app down before doing the iPhone setup and drive. Be sure to check out this topic so you understand how the firmware updates.

On the User Settings screen in the iOS app, you'll see the firmware version at the very bottom. You're going to want that to say 0.8.29 before you try using your Android with it. The only thing is that that firmware version is rolling out to people now but not everyone has access to it yet. Everyone should have access to it by January 2nd, but if you aren't seeing it update, send an email to help@automatic.com and reference this conversation. They may be able to push it to you sooner.

Which firmware is newer, 0.8.29 or 0.8.3?

I was confused by that too. ;) 0.8.29 is the newer version.

If you have auto-update enabled, you should already be updated to the latest version. Check out step 2 on the welcome message about how to get the app here and how to enable auto-update: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!for...

FYI, I was having major issues with the latest beta on my Moto X. It seems to be better now that I logged out, uninstalled the app, and reinstalled instead of working with just the update. I'll keep testing.

I feel like I've started missing more drives and getting more inaccurate logs since 0.3 actually. Even with restarting bluetooth and keeping the Automatic app open. Hopefully with the next version I'll be able to confirm what firmware version is loaded on my link.

I've reported this issue through the Google form a couple of times, but never heard anything back: I can't sign in to the Android app. I use "plus extensions" extensively for filtering mail, so my automatic account contains a '+'. The android app chokes on this, and doesn't provide very good error reporting.

It will tell me I have an invalid username/password combination if I try to log in, and will fail if I try a password reset. Using a different account without the '+' works fine.

Ok, thanks, Zandr. I'll check in with the Android devs on that.

They've taken note and will fix that, Zandr. Thanks for reporting it.

Sorry for the late report, I've verified this fix in 0.3.2.
I've been trying to get into the tester android group. But I haven't got accepted does anyone know how how it usually take. Because the app that I'm using on my iPad is not working.

We'll be accepting new members into the Android Beta group later this week based on phone type.

Ok. Note 3 has not been tested internally yet. There's been some field testing on it with beta users but I'm not sure yet how well it's working.

Any word on the changes made to the latest 0.3.1 update? I'm curious if it supports my HTC One

Zandr - Duncan's going to prepare a debug build for you to test for the '+' issue, if that's cool. It didn't make it in to the last build because it touches a lot of pieces and there just wasn't sufficient time to test it.

Works for me. I'll keep an eye out for it. Road trip next week, so I'll have plenty of testing time. ;)

Amy - I'm currently running Android 4.4.2 on my HTC One. When I do test on the Android, I make sure to not bring my iPad, or at least turn off the Bluetooth.

I tried logging out on the Android app and logging back in, but still can't connect to the Link.

For further background, when i first received my Link, I did the initial setup on a friend's iPhone. I then started using my own iPad, but didn't have to go through the initial setup process (I just logged in with my email and PW) and the iPad connected via Bluetooth right away.
When I installed the Android app, I assumed it would work the same where I can just log in and it would connect to the Link.

Is it possible that because I didn't run through the initial setup on Android, it can't pair to the Link?

I have two Links associated with my account, so I can't go through Setup on Android (it says Multi-car setup not yet available). Would it be possible to move one Link to another account temporarily, so I can test one on my HTC One? Or is multi-car setup coming really soon?

I'm also interested in this since I have 2 Links and 2 HTC Ones.

Yes, you can just create a new account for one of the Links. I'm not sure how soon multi-car is coming. Probably within a month or so, but not within days.

Just an update on my experience over the last week. My firmware caught up and it seemed to be running and logging drives accurately on 0.3.0 once I confirmed a bluetooth pairing request twice using 0000. It would be a shame if hitting in a pin is a restriction put in place by Android that can't be avoided even in the public release.

I updated to 0.3.1 and I can now see I am on the 0.8.29 firmware! My first long drive with 0.3.1 was this morning and it seems to have not logged, but not too worried that it will eventually catch up. I've force restarted the app and confirmed the link is paired for next time.

The only quirk I'm seeing that I haven't mentioned is that I think since 0.3.0, my drive score has been 100 despite breaking all three rules numerous times. One drive, the link beeped a bunch, logged the drive, but didn't log the errors. Then on a later drive, I didn't make the link beep at all, and all the errors appeared on that drive. Weird.

Aside: It's especially difficult to avoid rapid accels when you're trying to get out of snow patches!

Hi Ken. Thanks for the update. Yeah, there seems to be an Android drive score bug.

And yes, driving in snow has definitely been causing grief for some users. Sorry about that!

That pin-entering issue should be addressed for most users at this point and will be eradicated for everyone before the end of the beta.

where do you view the firmware version #?

Is the HTC One supported after the firmware update?

You can see what firmware you have by tapping on the triple dots on the top right, selecting Settings, and scrolling to the bottom. The HTC One is still giving us a bit of trouble but we've got a fix we're currently testing. We'll update the beta group once the fix is available for everyone.

I tried to join the google group to get beta access a few weeks ago. Is it now closed - or does it just take a while to be accepted in?

Hi Amy. Sorry, been out of town. I'm on a Nexus 4 with a stock ROM. Yes, I have an Automatic currently collecting dust on my desk, pending an Android app.
Yeah I retuned mine for that reason, it was collecting dust. Try getting into the beta group but it's been pending for 3 weeks now. There was no point to keep it.

Sorry about the delay, everyone. We're getting really close to approving most of the join requests. We just needed to work through kinks that were surfaced with the first wave of beta testers before letting more folks in to only have a frustrating experience.

Please read the API caveats. It's alpha still and I'm not sure how well it works with Android yet, but let us know if you have any success.
