We've just pushed a new Beta release which will hit your phones soon -- it includes two major fixes for the majority of missed trips we've been seeing. Specifically:
  • Android should no longer stop our background service from running (when it does this, many trips in a row may be missed)
  • Phones which have issues with activity detection are now working correctly (Samsung phones specifically had this issue, which caused missed trips)

In parallel, we have been working on the upcoming 0.4 release, which is coming in the next week or so, and will include the Check Engine feature, fixed Drive Scores, and the car color selection screen.

Also, it is very likely that "Currently Driving" will not appear in your app until a couple minutes into your drive. This is expected behavior and is because the Android app detects driving via the accelerometer so it takes a few moments of moving for this to kick in. Don't worry, though. The app is smart and will figure out when and where your trip started. The full trip should appear after you end your drive.

If you haven't read the release notes for the previous update, 0.3.2, please do!

Are you waiting to be approved in the Beta?
UPDATE: Thank you for your patience! We're approving all pending requests now.

Haven't joined the Beta but want in?
Please go to our Android Beta Google Group and join! Please be sure to read the Known Issues post before installing the app.

Been test-driving 0.3.3 over the weekend. Connection is definitely more stable, with no missed trips so far. Unfortunately, the app still has some problems processing trips, which I suspect is due to the lack of a good location fix. I park mostly in underground/sheltered parking lots so it's extremely unlikely that the device's GPS can obtain an accurate location at the destination. On the bright side, the trips that were not processed would show up eventually once I complete a new trip that is processed successfully. Definitely an improvement over 0.3.2, and looking forward to 0.4 in the coming week(s)!

Thanks, speedygonz. Yeah, that parking garage behavior is expected. But glad to hear it's more stable. That's good news for the folks waiting to be approved for the beta! :)

I bought the product and have an Android device not knowing it was still in closed beta. Kind of a let off that I have to now wait for an approval for the beta even though I already have the device on my hand so I'm debating whether or not I should return it or wait. The last time I waited was for the Nike FuelBand app for Android which never got released.

Moto X is good to go. I did notice a delay of 1 minute but it could be due to first time usage and beginning off-road in a parking lot.

Thanks, Joseph. Glad to hear Moto X is working well.

The delay is actually expected behavior and related to how Android detects that you're driving. This is briefly addressed under the "Driving" header on the Known Issues page in the Google Group. It was also described in more detail in the last Company Update topic for the 0.3.2 release, but I didn't include it here. Thanks for the reminder! I'll add it to this topic as well. :)

Hi Mike,

Some of those failed connects may be related to the length of the trip--if a trip is less than a few minutes long, the Link may occasionally miss it.

That doesn't explain the longer trips that aren't showing up, however. From our side, it appears that your phone is repeatedly attempting to connect to the Link, however it is unsuccessful. Other Moto X users are reporting good trips, but I'll see if I can dig in a bit more over the next day or two to see what's going on in your case.

Do you use any other Bluetooth devices or have them in your car when you're driving? It could be an interference issue.

You can try removing the Link from Bluetooth > Paired Devices screen. It may prompt you for the PIN again, and you can enter 0000. This may help--in the meantime, I'll keep looking.

Hi Laurel,

Thanks for the feedback--it looks like you are on version 0.3.3 (130), and we have a new version out, so if you update to 0.3.3 (137) you should see better trip accuracy. You can update by going into the Google Play Store on your device, sliding out the left-hand menu, selecting My Apps, scrolling to Automatic, and hitting "Update." While you're there, you can select the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the screen and selecting "Auto Update."

Also, keep in mind that the Link may not always pick up very short trips--this is a known issue and one we are working on improving it in subsequent releases.

Thanks for testing!

Hey Duncan, thanks for the info!

I did update to the most recent version (0.3.3 137), but still encounter the problem. Just FYI

Hi Laurel,

Oh--do you mean that those trips are being "split"? i.e., they're actually parts of one larger trip and the app is counting them as separate?

it seems to be working perfectly for me. my score is getting ruined by other drivers, the 405 commute does nothing to help my score. emergency breaking and acceleration to get out of harms way also seems to count against me.

I haven't posted anything in a while or replied to any because everything has been working great except.....

You know I had to complain about something....I like the fact I can shut off my Bluetooth when not using the app now if that was intended or not. Just have to remind myself to turn on before driving.

MPG seems to be better now that I didn't have to spend 1/2 an hour cleaning snow and ice off of my car. Cold temps don't seem to bother the link at all.

Keep up the good work...patiently waiting for 0.34 and beyond

I have a Nexus 5. 0.3.3-beta (137) 0.8.40

It took some time getting it set up on my phone (I had to retry it about 5 times)... Then I didn't get any data for a day or two. I downloaded an app that tells me which Bluetooth 4.0 devices are around, and sometimes the Automatic doesn't show up at all, and sometimes it does. My Fitbit Force and Belkin Car Audio Connect Bluetooth (http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U037/) seem to connect just fine.

Automatic worked great last night and today without me having to fiddle with it a lot. I've been doing a lot of turning my phone off and then on to get it to work (I didn't have to do that today). I've also unplugged my Belkin. I know jthe device is getting power, because even when it's not mapping my drive, it still beeps when I stop or speed up too rapidly.

I'm also having an issue with the app crashing at the end of a trip. And my phone pops up with Automatic Beta is unresponsive and gives me the options to Report. Wait. Close. If I choose "Wait" it will continue to give me the error regularly. If I choose to close, I don't get the error, but then I notice that if I choose close too quickly, it won't record my trip. But if I wait awhile before it closes, then it will have recorded my trip.

Thanks for the feedback Isaac--we are very close to releasing a new version of the app which should solve the problem of the app crashing at the end of the trip.

Sometimes if you have many Bluetooth devices running simultaneously, they can interfere with one another, but in general things should still work--please let us know if you see this problem consistently, as it will help our firmware engineers determine the cause of the issue.

Thanks Duncan. I got an e-mail from support saying my firmware was recently upgraded on my Automatic which could have been causing all the issues. Now it's running like it should, given the known issues. I will continue to report crashes within Android if they start up again.

Two trips of mine timed out on "Processing Trip" for beta 0.3.3 Moto X

2.0 mi, 5 mins

Sat in the car for 2 minutes "Processing Trip" until it timed out and deleted the recording. One trip came back later but when I returned to the car in the afternoon and turned the car on.

Ok. I just reviewed some of our internal known issues about 0.3 and it sounds related to one of them. 0.4 is being internally tested & QA'd now so should be pushed out to betas soon.

I noticed it again this morning in two trips but it turns out my data service halted altogether. Turns out to be an at&t glitch instead where I have to Airplane Mode cycle at 4:00 in the morning now as well as after work times. When I have no service or weak service for too long, the phone gives up phone calls and data services permanently until I airplane mode.

Do you work where there is no cell signal at all?

That Airplane Mode cycling is what I have to do also when I come out of the basement of my school where it is a complete cellphone dead zone.

The office is built to have no service. Concrete bricks all around and jammers and scanners. Whereas my home has too many trees to allow good service from any carrier you choose until they use something better than LTE that cuts through trees.

Loaded my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with the beta app and it took about 5minutes for the link to pair and communicate with the App. I had some crashes as it tried to process the first couple trips and I did a complete reboot of the phone and have had good success so far. Fantastic App and the API availability and trip viewer sample export App have worked well in my limited testing today. This is gonna be a huge product if it can be perfected for Android and have some of the reporting and export features enhanced over time. FREAKING AWESOME!

Thanks much, John! Welcome to Automatic! So glad you're enjoying it. Yes, this is certainly just the beginning. Lots of cool stuff -- and better stability -- to come.

Also, a note about your early issues. When you first setup the Link and take your first drives, the firmware on the Link needs to update. This can sometimes interfere with initial trip processing. We're making improvements to those updates so that they're less time consuming and intrusive. In the meantime, here are a couple informative topics about firmware & updates:

here's an odd one... I started noticing weird issues with my WiFi. for various reasons I spend a lot of time in airplane mode, and use only WiFi for internet and phonecalls, so I started wondering why my phone would loose signal from all WiFi networks and have weird connectivity issues. I looked at my phone settings and WiFi network settings, nothing helped much, so just now I uninstalled automatic, and the WiFi issues went away... I don't know why something changed in the last week or so... I'll reinstall and see if that strange WiFi behavior comes back. this is on a crazy lg optimus with cyanogen 4.3.1 android, I don't think that's why, I just get lucky and discover these things.

You can also try turning off a few other techs and see if your service improves. Computers sharing media files are running in the background 24/7. Streaming video. Playing mmorpg games. Listening to the radio on the tablet. And more. Each method takes 5 mbs of bandwidth. Oh and today's internet TV as well.
