Automatic doesn't "Fit"

I recently got a new vehicle - a 2018 Ford Escape. I made sure to remove my Automatic from my old car, and when I went to install it in the new vehicle, I found the car port is hidden behind an access panel.  This access panel is not removable (it's on a hinge) and the panel doesn't close when my Automatic (gen 1) is plugged in.  Does the 2nd gen Automatic have a lower profile? Anyone come up with a clever solution to make it fit - either in that vehicle or a different one?

I don't want to remove the panel - it'd look like crap if I did it. I think I might be out of luck :(

I cut a hole in the access panel using a Dremel tool. Doesn't look too bad. The biggest issue is that the Automatic Pro is white and the access panel is dark great.

I have a Dremel! Any chance you could snap a picture?
