Greetings Automatic users! Today, we’re happy to announce that version 2.6 of the Automatic iOS app and version 1.6 of the Android app are now available.

This is a major under-the-hood release where we overhauled a lot of how the app processes the data it receives from the adapter.

This release also includes a highly requested new feature! Now all trips the car takes are logged on the adapter, even if your phone isn't in the car. Next time your phone is in range, those trips will appear in the app. However, since Automatic relies on the phone for GPS, those trips won't have routes or start/end locations – just distance, fuel efficiency, duration, etc. See this FAQ for more information on trips with "Route Not Available."

v1.6 of the Automatic app for Android is now available in the Google Play Store, and v2.6 of the iOS app is now live in the App Store.

No firmware update at this time, Randy. We are, however, working on a major firmware release. There's no ETA for its release, but once it's available, we'll be sure to make an announcement here in the community.

Can you give us an idea as to what this "major firmware release" will do or address?

Hey Jason. The next major firmware release will include a lot of “under-the-hood” improvements for increased reliability/connectivity but also cross-platform support.

Downloaded...I will be checking it out later today.  Was there any massaging of the accel/braking algorithms?

Not in this release, Ichamp.

Let us know what you think about trips with "Route Not Available" after you have a chance to familiarize yourself with it. This FAQ explains how it all works.

After this app update my Note 4 running Lollipop will no longer connect. It just keeps saying connecting. Rebooting & restarting Bluetooth didn't help.

Thanks for reporting this to us, Dr. Mom. We're still investigating these connection issues and don't have any troubleshooting steps to share at this time, but we'll be sure to keep this topic updated with the latest info!

My Note 4 no longer connects after the update. I have Verizon and have not upgraded to Lollipop.

Sorry about that Michael. We recently released a hotfix for the Android app, and it looks like you may be running the latest build. Can you uninstall the app and re-download it from the Google Play Store?

If you're still unable to connect after trying this, please send a message to our tech support team at help@automatic.com and they'll investigate.

Is there any reason to constantly use GeoFencing if the adapter doesn't require it to log trips? I understand the importance of location services but isn't this something that could be triggered once the adapter is connected only instead of constantly running?

Hi rjshimages. While the app now displays trips that don't have GPS data, the app also uses Location Services as a way to "wake-up" the app. Here's more info on how Location Services is still used by the app even when you're not driving.

If your battery usage is a concern for you, be sure to check out this FAQ and email our tech support team at help@automatic.com if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

After installing the update, it looks like my phone is no longer connecting with the adapter.  My last trip logged is from yesterday morning.

Attempting to repair or reconnect the adapter gets to "Encrypting Connection", then I get an error like:
"Request time out / There was a problem blahing, something about the internet connection / Quit | Try Again"

I was using Android, but switched to iOS on Saturday, and everything looked like it was running fine.

Thanks, Randy. So toggling Bluetooth off and back on again helped out? Have you received the notification again after doing this?

Hi everyone. Thanks for your patience as we work to resolve these connection issues that have popped up in the recent iOS and Android releases. These connection issues didn't appear in our beta testing, and we apologize for the trouble this has caused.

We have now identified the bug in the Android release, and we're working on implementing a fix. In the meantime, Android users should be able to resolve their connection issues by reconnecting their adapter. You can reconnect your adapter by tapping on the "Replace/Reconnect Adapter..." link found under the User Settings menu of the app.

We're still working to identify the bug in our iOS release and will provide another update once we know more.

darn.  No data on all of my trips today.  No notifications...just no data.  I've logged out and back in...now to see if the comms are back.

Sorry about that, lchamp. If logging out and logging back in doesn't work, try reconnecting your adapter. If that proves unsuccessful, let us know.

Downloaded the new iOS update last night. I thought-great-they've solved the connecting issues. But no. My phone wouldn't connect with the adaptor. Restarted my iPhone. It connected but doesn't record the trip. I reported the problem from the app. No reply as yet. I've had the automatic since it was released nearly two years now and have never had the problems of the last week.

Welcome to the community David, and I'm sorry that you have joined under these circumstances! It sounds like restarting your phone didn't help out. Are you also seeing the Bluetooth notification as seen in this FAQ

Same notification bug on Iphone 6 plus; toggled bluetooth on/off, connection fixed! At first the trip was not recorded, but after checking later on, it appeared. I guess there must be a loophole in your pre-release testings!
Thank you again, Automatic staff, for your prompt replies.

We're happy to help, Jonathan! Since toggling Bluetooth off then back on again, have you received the notification? If you haven't received it since doing so, this might work for others as well.

All is well on my system now...here's what I did.

1.  logged off and then back on.
2.  Started car and caused engine to start (I have a Prius and engine sometimes doesn't start until I hit 15mph or so).
3.  No connection, so I manually reconnected via my profile page.
4.  Drove a couple of miles and parked.
5.  Trip processed OK
6.  The Lost data from all my trips for the day showed up, minus any GPS data.  All stops were at "unknown location".  Because I had no connection all day, the app thought my phone was missing and stored all trip data, inadvertently testing that new feature.  Worked fine.
7.  Restarted car...no connection.
8.  Rebooted phone (Android) and app showed background capture active.
9.  Started car and drove.  Worked as advertised.  (I did not check hard accel/braking).

Everything seems to be back to normal.  We'll see what happens tomorrow when I drive again.

Good job.

Quick update...all my (lost) trips yesterday showed up on the phone app, but not on my web dashboard.

More followup:  This morning, Auto-capture did not work.  I manually connected with the engine running, and it quickly went to ignition wait mode then currently driving.

I will be checking the connection mode data in my profile before every drive until the 'hot fix' is implemented and I can trust it.

Not a problem as long as I can manually connect.

Thanks as always for the updates, lchamp. I have some more info to share:

I’m glad your trips finally showed up in the app! The reason why your trips aren’t showing up in the dashboard is because they are trips without GPS data (aka “Route Not Available” trips)
. As this FAQ explains, “Route Not Available” trips only appear in the app at this time, but we will be adding them to dashboard in a future update.

The hotfix for Android was pushed last evening and is available in the Google Play Store now. The update is still called v1.6, but you can tell if you have the updated version installed by navigating to the footer of the User Profile screen within the Automatic app. Look for 18085 in parentheses (the build number of the hotfix). The initial 1.6 release was build number 17225.

It’s also worth noting that it may take a few minutes for “Currently Driving” to appear in the Android app. This is because the Android version of the app uses the accelerometer to detect when you’re driving.
More info here.

Once you download the latest version and complete some more driving, let us know if you’re still experiencing problems. If you do, send a quick note to our tech support team at help@automatic.com, and they’ll investigate.

You guys must think I hibernated all winter..I am alive and have been following what's been going on.
I must be one of the lucky ones that can say that I really haven't had any issues besides a few missed trips but then it catches up on the next time it connects.

Hello! I wanted to provide a quick update for all of the iOS users in this discussion. Version 2.6.1 is now available in the App Store, and it addresses the "Bluetooth Error" notification bug. Be sure to update when you can, and let us know if you continue to see the notification after receiving the update.

Please note that the update may take a while to propagate to all users, so if you're unable to download it now, the update will appear very soon.
