We’re making great progress on the next major version of Automatic, but in the meantime we're proud to release version 1.1 which replaces the automated component of Crash Alert with an emergency call center, staffed by trained human beings to assist you in a car accident, all at no additional cost.

The agent can stay on the line with you until emergency services arrive and even contact your loved ones to let them know what’s happened. Best of all, we're doing this at no additional cost to our users: Crash Alert is still a free feature of Automatic.

When you update the app, it will ask you to verify your phone number. This is now required to activate Crash Alert. We’ll never share your phone number or use it for any purpose other than calling you in the event of a crash.

Crash Alert is in beta. Learn more on the Crash Alert feature page.

The verify phone number text is not working for me. It says that it couldn't verify my number.

Same for me. Tried three times and verify failed. Had to deactivate Crash Alert to get beyond the opening screen

Same here. Verification failed so I had to disable. :(

EDIT: Force quitting the app fixed the issue.

Kill the app, restart your phone, and then reopen. Worked for me after I did that...

Yes, Joseph Werle is absolutely right. Thanks much, Joseph. Sorry about that, everyone. It's a known bug that only affects a small number of edge cases but it will be addressed in the next update.

I'm in the deeper part of the edge. I tried the suggested work around of killing the app, restarting phone. I'm running iOS 7.0.4 on iPhone 5S.

I've sent the email - thanks. Will the app sense that my number has been registered? Will the app not prompt me to send a text message?

If Tech Support has had to manually enter your phone number for you, the app will show your number after you either log out & log in, kill the app & restart it, or the next time you take a drive. You won't have to send another text message through the app.

I cannot get my wife's phone to verify. I was able to verify my number on my iPhone 5. My wife has a 4s. I have tried the method above. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, for some strange reason I can't add any Emergency Contacts on Crash Alert. When I select a contact it shows up an error telling me: Invalid Phone Number, Please update **** number in your address book.

Hi Javier! Sorry you're having problems setting up Crash Alert. I passed your message along to our engineers, and they're looking into it.

We'll be sure to post another message when we figure out what the issue is.

Hi again Javier. I have an update on the error that you experienced. Right now, we do not currently support adding emergency contacts with a Puerto Rico number. Having said that, we're planning to add support for these numbers, and we'll be sure to update you once we do.

Awesome feature, thanks guys! Does the emergency nature of the feature allow us to use any available cell reception? ie if I don't have signal with my T Mobile phone when I crash, will Automatic use Verizon's network?

Hi Matt! Thanks for your question. In order for Crash Alert to function as intended, your phone must be able to connect to your current cellular network provider. Automatic does not provide a "backup" network in the event that your phone is unable to upload crash details via your current service provider. Check out the Important Limitations section at the bottom of our Crash Alert page for more details.

That makes sense. Do you know if it's a technical limitation? I know all cell phones are capable of dialing 911 on any reachable cellular network, but perhaps it's different with data connections? Regardless, I hope in the future a feature like this would have the same network-agnosticism that 911 calls have now.

Thanks for the feedback, Matt. The reason that "backup networks" are not supported is because the Monitoring Center calls emergency services on your behalf. Your phone does not directly call 911. Please visit this link for more details on the procedure.
