Can you manually update fuel levels for cars which cannot report fuel level to Automatic?

I am considering buying an Automatic. However, both of my cars cannot report fuel levels to Automatic. Is there a feature where I can manually enter my fuel levels at different points in a trip to help understand my mpg?

Hi Lina,

Thanks for getting in touch!

At this time, this is not a feature of Automatic. I have changed your question to an idea so that our product team can revisit this as we continue to develop Automatic.

While you won't be able to receive fuel level alerts, such as when your tank is getting low, Automatic will still be able to report your fuel costs based on the factors that we take to measure these costs.

Thanks again, Lina. I hope this helped!

Hi Lina,

I just wanted to update this thread to include that if your car doesn't report fuel levels, we still provide MPG data for trip costs. Also, we are planning to add the ability to manually add fuel costs into a future iteration of our core application. With such a feature, drivers will be able to update their MPG costs with the price they paid on their fillups.

@Jeff as someone who drives an older car - it would be cool if Automatic could learn what the expected fuel level of my car was over time, based on the estimated MPG data, fuel tank size, and driving habits.

For example, my car consistently goes about 350 miles on 1 tank of gas and it should be easy to predict the fuel remaining if I manually enter when I fill up because I consistently drive the same commute routes. Then the Automatic could theoretically push out a reminder alert to tell me when I'm about to hit empty (or a user could opt-in to their preferred refill level like filling up at 1/4 tank).

Expanding on the predictive analytics and location data, what if my Automatic could detect that I stopped for 10 min at a gas station and push out an alert asking if I filled up my tank? Maybe you could partner with some gas stations to enable check-ins or loyalty rewards.

Hey Jing,

Thanks for chiming in!

It is an interesting solution to those who have cars that cannot report fuel levels. I'll pass it along to our team, and perhaps it will be something of interest to add to a future version of the app.

Thanks!
