Can automatic give any history of codes prior to it's installation? As an example my trucks check engine light came on last Saturday morning, I installed automatic this afternoon, is there any way for automatic to retrieve that code?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for sharing your question, and welcome to the Automatic community!

If your car's MIL was on (and remains illuminate) prior to installation, the adapter will pick up the code and the Automatic app will display the information. If your car's MIL is off, or has since been cleared prior to installation of the Automatic adapter, you will not get the code unfortunately. With that said, it's possible that your car manufacturer has implemented a system which keeps track of codes from the car's history, however we don't have access to that information in most cases. Also, it's possible your car uses the CEL light for maintenance reminders (you can check your car's manual for more information on this). If so, that may be why we don't display anything for the check engine light. We can only read certain codes from the computer specifically related to trouble codes. We can't read other protocols, such as maintenance reminders, ABS lights, etc.

I hope this helps answer your question, and if anything was unclear please let me know, we're always happy to help. :)
