What's the most common reason people call the AAA? Flat tire? Keys locked in the car? Nope. A dead battery.

Battery problems are the number one issue the AAA responds to, and a study by the ADAC – Germany's largest car club – found that nearly one-third of car breakdowns were battery-related.

Today, we’re bringing you insight into your car’s battery health as the latest addition to our Dashboard Labs! Learning more about what happens to your car battery’s state of charge when you leave it parked can help ensure you’re not left stranded in with a dead battery.

Through this analysis, you can learn whether your battery loses its ability to hold a charge over time. If your “state of charge” is in the Danger Zone, there is a higher risk of your battery dying the next time it’s sitting parked.

If you have a second-generation adapter, check out your battery health in our Dashboard Labs here. If you don’t see any data yet, please hang tight! We should have something for you in the coming weeks.

To help us deliver even more insights about your car's battery health, please help us by taking this survey about your car battery here. Thank you, and we hope you like this new feature. More to come!

Since this tool is still in beta, there may be some discrepancies in the data. We are continuing to work on perfecting the model, but we were just too excited to not share it with you.

Thanks and very interesting. I can see a "BATTERY'S RECENT PERFORMANCE" graph, but not a "State of Charge" graph with bold black and dotted lines. Can you point out how to find that?

Thanks again!

Hey Stanley,

Sorry for any confusion. The state of your battery's charge is what is being displayed in the recent performance. Please let me know if that needs any further clarity.

Not sure if you guys are accounting for this, but I leave my car parked and the accessories on and operating for up to an hour at times. Does your battery drain compensate for when I leave everything on, running on battery power only?

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the question!
Your graph shows the data for the starter battery at all times, even when you leave everything on.

Also, to build the estimate of when your battery will enter the danger zone, we do take into account the hour when your accessories are left on, but also many hours after you’ve parked, so the effect of leaving accessories on should level out.

I hope that helps :)

Kudos to the team! I have wondered for some time about the state of my battery.  It occasionally seems to be struggling to turn the engine over.  This Dashboard feature is exactly what I needed.  My results show a slow decline, but they're detailed enough to warn me ahead of any urgent need to replace the battery.  Thank you. Another reason to love Automatic.

Very interesting! One more awesome innovation from the team at Automatic. I was recently at the dealership to get an oil change, and based on the presented report it was clearly time to get a new battery. While I should trust my dealer, I do prefer to check things with data points. I thought for a split second, "can I check my battery health in Automatic?" and then relented and opted to replace it. Now, if only the data you have on my vehicle goes back further than the week or so that the chart shows, I could know the truth. Keep up the great work!

Will this feature ever come to the first generation adapter?

Hi Dan,

This will not be something supported on the first generation Automatic adapter as it isn't capable of reading this type of data.

you absolutely must provide push notifications if it gets below a certain percent, and more urgent notifies when it gets to the danger zone!

Thanks for the feedback, David :)

This feature is still in beta, but we will be looking at how we can better implement it down the road for the benefit of knowing and situations like you described.

Thanks again!

My car is a 2015 Ford C-Max hybrid. How does it account for the type of battery my car is using? It's reporting it as being worse than 85% of other Ford vehicles.

Mine also reported that it was worse than 97% of other Hyundai Accents

but with that being said it also reported the following "It should take more than 3 weeks of your car sitting parked before your car's battery will enter the Danger Zone."

So with that said I think it is safe to say that my battery is still in very good condition. I wouldn't worry about how it compares to other cars. There is no reason to replace it as long as it can stay charged for more than two weeks of inactivity.

Yeah, I hear you, and I'm not worried so much as to whether that data is taken into account.

There is no starter per sé, and because the charging circuitry and method is different, I just wondered if it took any of that model data into account.

Jeff, Alum

  • 14,146 Points 10k badge 2x thumb
Hey there!

To answer your original concerns, the measurement is looking at just your starter lead-acid battery and not the hybrid battery. Also, it is only comparing the State of Charge 8 hours after being parked when it is comparing vs other cars.

I hope that helps!

This is a good idea, but I think the data is complete junk: there is NO black solid/dotted lines and the red/green bars at the bottom are all the same height, so I assume it's not a bar graph. I have an almost-new battery and it's saying it's worse than 96% of Mazda 3's.

A Prius has two batteries - a smaller one boots the electronics which turns on the larger traction battery. I assume that Automatic reports the state of the smaller battery. Is there a way to get the SOC of both batteries?

I was very impressed with the report. However, I clicked on the email in my iPhone and when it opened in Safari discovered that the report was not built to be responsive / mobile friendly. That's the only improvement I can suggest to such great additional data.

I like it!

I will echo that it should be responsive to smaller screens, please.

Also it seems that I only have data until March 15. Is this supposed to be live data?

I would also love integration with IFT TT and push notifications. This is a warning you need without having to go look for it.

Thanks again !

I had a generation 1 adapter and recently updated to a Gen 2. When I go to the page for this lab, I get an error that the page doesn't exist. I'd love to get this to work as the battery is actually an area of particular concern to me on my car right now. I'm trying to help my dealer diagnose an intermittent problem.

Hi Dan. The Web Dashboard and all Dashboard Labs apps need to be connected to the same account as the app for it to work properly. Please lot into the Web Dashboard with the same login you use for the app. You should then see all the data.

Allow me to clarify: I'd logged in to the web dashboard and I can see my drives without any issue. I logged into the discussion board with a different e-mail address. I can utilize other labs without issue. Only the battery health lab gives an issue as described.

Ah! That makes more sense. :) Apologies for the misunderstanding. This community is hosted on a 3rd party platform called Get Satisfaction, which has its own login system. Can you try clicking this link: https://dashboard.automatic.com/labs/battery/index.html  and let me know what happens?  I just checked it w/ my account and the page is loading fine. If you're still seeing an issue then yes, we may want to log in as you and see if we can tell what's going on.

Actually I just checked your data, and it looks like the latest reading we have is back in April.  Let me see what the issue is.

As for the graph period of time, right now you cannot adjust this, it displays the last 10 days that we have data.  We'll look to add this feature in the future

Hey Leigh - Ugh, that's annoying! Sorry about that. Send an email to help@automatic.com and Tech Support can take a look. Reference this post and give them those dates. They *might* be able to dig that up. (It's a bit of a thing to dig up data that's older than a couple of weeks). You probably won't hear back from them until next week as it's nearly end of day on a Friday here but LMK how it goes!

Battery died last Thursday, I was stuck after a dinner meeting with new clients and needed to have my battery replaced.  Please let me know how I can help you improve this web site.  I was using a lead-acid battery and decided to upgrade to a AGM battery on Friday.  The new battery is fully charged and works like a charm, but I would have liked to more proactive and replace the battery before I got stranded.

Thanks Amy. The intro email from AL said users should get an email when a firmware update is pushed through, rather than having to manually check this forum. Is that good information?
Photo of Amy

Amy

  • 68,850 Points 50k badge 2x thumb
Hi Don - firmware updates are for the adapter and the app, generally. Some things that happen in firmware may be connected to Dashboard Labs features, but as Dashboard Labs is also a website, it has its own set of updates outside the firmware pushes. So when it's been updated, it will just update automatically as any website would and you'll notice the difference the next time you visit the page. Also, I'll update here when an update is made to the Battery Health page and if you're "following" this topic, you'll get an email notification.

HI Amy, I have been using an Automatic 2nd Gen. for 6 weeks, I love it. When do you expect that I will see data for my battery and the new Car Health and Driving Style. Feel free to access my account metrics, etc. (or pass them along to a senior tech) because I really would like to see these metrics in order to support my disabilities and safety (I don't feel comfortable sharing them publicly but I you have a way of emailing me directly then I can share that information). So if you could please check into this I'd appreciate it because I am not looking to use either of those labs for "fun" rather for safety reasons related to my disabilities and service dog. Please advise asap. Thanks. Donald.
