Today, we’re bringing you insight into your car’s check engine light and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) your vehicle has triggered as the latest addition to our Dashboard Labs! You’ll be able to see a history of all the DTCs your vehicle has triggered and what other DTCs similar cars to yours have encountered.

This is a first version of the tool; in the future, we will improve the predictions for DTCs your car may face.  We want to answer the question: How do my driving and my environment affect what DTCs get triggered in my vehicle?

Since this tool is still in beta, there may be some discrepancies in the data. We are continuing to work on perfecting the data presentation, but we were just too excited to not share it with you.

I have two cars and 1 automatic. The data for engine codes is pointing to wrong car.

The error codes were for my Prius but showing up for Acura MDX. Thanks for looking into it.
Nothing showing up for me but my dash light came in this week....????
It says nothing has been recorded but my Automatic is plugged in.

Hi Barbara,

Right now this page gets updated every 5 days or so.  We're working on making updates more frequent and pushing the feature out of beta.  As for now, you should see your data pop up within a couple of days.  Please let me know if you still don't see your data after  a couple of days and I will dig in and help out.

Also, Barbara - this is for the Check Engine Light only. So if a different dashboard light came on, it would not show up in your app or on the new DTC page. Here's an FAQ with more explanation of that.

I would love to see some deeper data if possible.

  • Can I see whether my tire pressure sensors are working? If not, which ones are failing?
  • My vehicle allows me to set interval reminders for oil changes, filter changes and similar routine maintenance. Can I see those through the app?
  • Would it be possible to tell me how long my vehicle sits in idle, rather than actually being off or in-motion?
  • Can I be presented with details on combustion efficiency? What if a piston fails or something, and I don't know it? (This actually happened on my girlfriend's 2000 Honda Civic. It was running with only a single piston - no wonder it couldn't go up hills!)

Hey Chris,
Great ideas in there!  I can give a hint that the last bullet point is very related to something we're working on.  As for the idle time, we do have that data available in our API: https://developer.automatic.com/api-reference/#trip and we're looking to integrate that into a new lab or feature

Hello...

When looking up my Nissan Altima Hybrid 2009, it made no indication of it being a Nissan Altima _HYBRID_?  So is this data I looked at reflect those of regular Altima or just all general Altimas in that year bracket?  Really liked the concept of this... Keep up the great work! :)

Hi Billy, It looks like you're right, thanks for pointing this out to us! You are seeing stats for all Altimas, not just Hybrids.  It looks like the model name of your vehicle is an Altima, and what we call "submodel/trim" is Hybrid.  We'll look at our data source and see if we can make a fix.

Hi: It's a great idea, but it should be perfected. The DTC codes must be related to the specific engine of the car. For example, I drive a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with permanent four wheel drive, with the 3,7L V6 engine. In the DTC codes prediction for such vehicle appears codes related to EGR sensor. Nevertheless, the Jeep 3,7L V6 engine doesn't have one. That's what I meant...Other than that, it will be a great tool for diagnostics and troubleshooting. Keep up the good work!

That's a great suggestion Andres; there's a lot of little things we're doing to improve it and I'll add this to the list!  Once we start slicing the cars into a more granular level like this, we do want to make sure we have a statistically significant sample, so that's one hurdle we'll have to overcome.

Sure Jerry. One little step after another leads to success...Thanks to you and the team for a beautifully implemented idea (the module and the app) and for the hard work to improve it.

Hi there, just noticed this feature when looking at my monthly report - this has great potential.

Maybe allow users to comment on what the underlying fault was and how it was cured/resolved? i.e. I've had repeated faults from my EVAP system which I now see 29% of similar cars get and (fingers crossed) have been solved by simply replacing my gas cap - a simple $10 fix. Obviously not everything will be such a simple fix, but some kind of feedback mechanism could be useful for other users to view as a 'check this (first)' option?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,
We're thinking along the exact same lines.  Look for some improvements to Automatic's Check Engine light feature in the coming months.  Thanks for the feedback!

The tool only shows 1 code that showed up 8/2015. I have had a different code, P1174, show up a couple of times over the last year. The Automatic app recognized them and showed them in the app. But, P1174 does not show up for my car in this tool at all.

Hey, lostformars. Welcome to the community! The Diagnostic Trouble Code lab updates once a week, so there is a bit of lag verses the app. But our team is working on reducing the delay and making updates more frequent. Thank you for you patience!
