How do I know how fuel mileage is calculated for my 97 Volvo 850 (non-turbo, stick shift)? The Automatic site says, "To see whether your car’s MPGs can be calculated more accurately [i.e., through sensors] or less accurately [i.e. through EPA estimates] by Automatic, check it on our Car Compatibility page." The comparability page though only says if the Automatic Pro, which I already purchased, will work on my car - it shares no specifics. Thank you!

Where are you seeing that text that you quoted? That's old copy from our old car compatibility page. As you've discovered, the car compatibility page no longer includes that information. It is solely focused on whether or not a particular car is supported for use with Automatic.

Here's our FAQ about how mpg is calculated.

Thanks, Amy. Here's the link: https://blog.automatic.com/getting-started-with-automatic-how-is-mpg-calculated-6478b31e0a82. Re your reply, do you have accessible information on whether or not a 1997 Volvo 850 provides Automatic with Engine Load and Mass Air Flow data via its OBD2? I'm trying to figure out if Automatic is providing fuel mileage based on actual driving data or EPA estimate information. My fuel mileage seems low, but Automatic's weekly assessment says I'm getting 27mpg, which is incongruent but possible.

Ah! Thanks for pointing out that blog post. I'll see if it can be edited since we no longer provide that info on the car compatibility page.

I'm asking Tech Support if they can answer your question. I'll let you know what they say.

Hi. Tech Support found another 1997 Volvo 850: GT we have in our system and were able to confirm that we do get engine load and MAF data from that car. If you feel like your MPG is way off, please send an email to help@automatic.com and they can take a closer look.
