To check and clear the check engine light from your vehicle, you must first set up Automatic and ensure that your adapter has the latest version of firmwareAs explained in this FAQ, if your adapter is currently updating its firmware, you may run into problems with the feature (the "clear check engine light" button will be inactive/greyed out).

Next, turn your vehicle's ignition on. Once the app connects to the adapter and reads "currently driving," it will read the check engine light and display the relevant diagnostic codes under the engine information screen.
  • On the iOS app, this screen can be accessed by tapping the car icon in the upper left-hand corner.
  • On the Android app, this screen can be accessed tapping the engine icon in the upper right-hand corner.
On this screen, you’ll also see the option to clear the light, and instructions on how to do so will be presented to you. Please keep in mind, however, that if the problem remains with your car, the light will eventually reappear.

Important note: Automatic can only read and interpret generic engine codes related to the check engine light. Please see this related FAQ for more details. Also, please see this FAQ for information about smog tests after resetting your Check Engine Light.
