UPDATE 10/2016

What is firmware?

The firmware is the software embedded on the adapter and it updates automatically over the air after we push it out.

Please visit this FAQ to see the most recent firmware versions available. For firmware release notes, please see this FAQ.

How does it update?

2nd generation & Pro adapters: Initial firmware updates will occur during the setup process and may take up to 5 minutes to complete. Subsequent over-the-air updates will take up to 5-10 minutes (while driving).

1st generation adapter: The car needs to be running initially to start the update but it will continue to update on the adapter when you turn the car off as long as your phone is still in Bluetooth range. It will also update while you're driving. The whole process usually takes about 20-30 minutes of cumulative driving or about 15-20 minutes with the car off and the phone within Bluetooth range. However, once you update to v0.9.7, subsequent over-the-air firmware updates will only take a fraction of the time (5-10 minutes while driving) and should be much less disruptive to reliability. We are very careful when publishing firmware updates to the adapter. In spite of all our testing procedures in ensuring a quality firmware, we usually take several days to slowly roll out the update to ensure there are no new issues being caused to our users.

How big are firmware updates?

The information we download to your phone and load to the adapter is very, very small - minuscule compared to other things that you use your data plan for. The only impact on your data plan is when we send the file to your phone which is generally 100-200KB and only takes a few seconds. The time it then takes to update the adapter is all being conducted via Bluetooth. Since we will be updating firmware a maximum of twice a month, it shouldn't affect your data plan much at all.

How do you see what firmware your adapter is on?

Pro adapter: Tap "Glovebox", then tap "Pro Adapter"

Gen 1 & Gen 2 adapters: You can see which version you’re on by navigating to the footer of your car’s profile (which is accessible from the Settings screen). If your adapter is currently updating its firmware, the footer will also show its progress as a percentage (see screenshot below). Important note: Once a firmware update reaches 100%, the app will display the older version it was updating from. The new firmware version will appear in the footer the next time you connect to the adapter and complete a trip.
