Automatic uses a combination of sensors in the vehicle to determine your MPG. The main pieces of data that the adapter pulls is Engine Load and Mass Air Flow (via the OBD-II port). If that’s not available, Manifold Absolute Pressure data (MAP) is "next in line" for determining MPG. Finally, if your car doesn't provide MAP sensor data, the app then uses the EPA estimate to determine MPG.
