There are a few reasons this could be the case:

  1. The adapter has gone to sleep
If too much time has passed since you began Setup, the adapter may have timed out and “gone to sleep”. This is a precaution to protect your car battery. Please unplug and replug the adapter to “wake it up”.

  2. Vehicle already associated with a user with Automatic Pro or Lite
Because Automatic Pro and Lite record every trip a car takes, not just the ones *you* take, we’ve limited access to a single user for now. We may add support for multiple users per vehicle in the future. If the other user is known and agrees to share the account with you, you can simply log in to the same account and don’t need to run setup.

  3. Incompatible hardware
Setup cannot be completed with any hardware other than the Automatic Pro or Lite adapter.

  4. International car
Due to its reliance on a cellular connection which requires Automatic Labs to be in contract with a cellular service provider, Automatic Pro will not work at all outside the United States. Automatic Lite & Pro (even if you manage to get a cellular connection) will get stuck on the VIN recognition portion of Setup because it will only recognize VINs on cars manufactured for sale in the US. More explanation here.

  5. Some Android Phones
Some Samsung phones implement Bluetooth in a way that is less than ideal for our setup needs. The cause is known but complex to explain, but for these phones setup reliably fails the first time. Thankfully the fix is simple:
    - Unplug and replug the adapter.
    - Visit the Bluetooth settings in your phone and manually pair the adapter.
    - Go back to the app and start the setup process again.
Please give this a shot and let us know if it doesn't work.

  6. Setup inexplicably failed
It’s possible Setup might just fail the first time. When in doubt, follow the instructions on the screen to try again.
