In the coming week, we're debuting a new service for Automatic users: a monthly summary of your driving activity and the latest findings from our data science team. This month we looked at how you did in October and how close to the EPA rating most cars get in MPG.

The emails are just starting to roll out as we introduce this new feature, so you may not see yours right away. So over the next week, watch your inboxes for the October Driving Data email!

If you just started using Automatic, you may not see much data, but don't worry! There are many more insights to come.

Please let us know what you think by posting to this topic. All feedback is welcome and helps us improve these emails. We have lots more on the way.

Drive on,
Automatic Insights Team

Further tweeks on the 70 mph issue with my vehicle 2011 Ford Fiesta. Cannot drive over 67 mph and I get dinged for the 70 mph throttle. Any info for this issue will be appreciated.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for getting in touch! Could you please email help@automatic.com and reference this situation? They will be able to take a look into the data and see what is causing the 70 MPH alert to be triggered while driving under that speed.

Sounds like your speedometer is miss calibrated. Use a hand held GPS with a passenger in the car to check it. have the passenger call out the MPH from the gps and see if that correlates to your speedometer reading.

Also do you have the factory size specified tires on the car? are the inflated to spec.

Slightly larger than stock tires seem a likely culprit. Auto makers tend to tune the speedometer to read a little high, as there are significant penalties on the maker if it reads low. 4–8% high is common. So this isn't as likely a calibration problem as it is a measurement problem; larger tires mean fewer revolutions per mile which means a lower indicated speed.

Have you tried using OBD Fusion as your speedometer. Based on radar readings -- a sign states your speed -- OBD Fusion is more accurate than my car's speedometer.

I find the estimate for gas price to be inaccurate. Perhaps the user could input how much they paid per gallon when they fill up?

I just received my first 'Monthly Insight Email' and it is awesome!  Kudos!  It has a lot of information and ALL of it is very useful!  I appreciate the work you guys have done over time to achieve this!

Thanks!  :-)

This is a great email and it is one of the few meaningful and useful emails I get.  I can do something with this email as opposed to other garbage emails that promote the product and provide nothing I can act on (except buy more junk).  Keep up the good effort displayed here.

I would like to see tracking of Medical Trips.  The IRS allows 0.24 per mile.  I currently use the Business tracking that works great!  Gary

Thanks for the idea, Gary!

Custom trip tags are a planned idea, and we hope to implement it in a future version of Automatic.

Thanks again :)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I just received and viewed the monthly report.

I just received and viewed the monthly report. I do like it, though I've not gotten too terribly analytical about the information. My main reason for tracking this is get an idea about my general driving as I consider allowing an insurance company to install something for a reduced insurance rate. I'm on the fence still. I will say the Dashboard app just does not see to work as advertised or reliably. It will be nice if it at some point works.  One suggestion which you say is required would be to offer as a conversation type the option of 'comment'.  You asked in the email to post or make a comment yet you only offer "Question" "Idea" "Problem" and "Praise".

Hey Ryusho,

Thanks for reaching out and glad to hear you like the Monthly Insights email!

Also, we apologize for the confusion in the email. When we said to comment, we were referring to posting a comment in this thread. I went ahead and moved it over for you.

If you wouldn't mind, could you please provide me with additional information with regards to the issues you are having with the dashboard? What part of it isn't working for you?

Hi there,

Pleasantly surprised to receive a monthly e-mail from my Automatic last night - glad to see that you are continuing to develop new ways to present data in an engaging and 'usable' way.

Any chance of doing the number crunching to allow for a similar view of previous months through the Dashboard (I have 2 years+ worth of data at the moment)? That way I can track whether summer vs winter makes a difference, and compare year to year. And it will give you something to do over the Thanksgiving break :-)

Hi Mike,

Glad to hear you were happy with what you found in the Monthly Insights email!

At this time, there are no plans to utilize these tools to visualize past trips. However, you may find some of the features in our Dashboard Labs useful with all your past data (as long as it was recorded with Automatic). Maybe something like that could be added to Dashboard Labs down the road :)

I would love to see how my driving stats compare to the rest of the population. For example, what percentile am I in for total distance? Perhaps a histogram showing the distance distribution? Would be even better if separated by segment, e.g. primarily city, suburban, highway, etc.

Hey Shannon,

Thanks for your feedback! We are continuing to build the insights product and the features within. Feedback like your's is valuable and greatly appreciated as we continue to grow and shape the product.

Thanks again :)

People are always talking about which states have the best drivers. I'd love to see how the automatic data would describe drivers from different states (aggressive, slow, fast, etc).

Loving the new colors - look and feel of the updates is awesome! Also have an idea for a UI update: why not start team challenges like Fitbit does? Make friends with other Automatic users and compete for who can get the best driving score for a week or a month.

Thanks for the suggest, JMad! This is something that has been shared before and is very interesting. When that was originally suggested, it wasn't something we were planning to do.

Today, that remains the same, but it may be something we eventually do consider if we see it as a highly desired feature.

Thanks again :)

Your information on my cost of fuel is too high, Is there a way to adjust that figure taking in consideration the cost of fuel in my market. How can I do this?

Hi Awilda,

Thanks for reaching out and sorry to hear that you are seeing inaccuracies in your data. If you could please contact help@automatic.com, our team will be able to take a look into what is potentially causing the issue.

Thanks.

I track my fuel amounts and cost at every fill up using GasCubby on my iPhone. Since I already have the data I would love to throw the cost per gallon into automatic.

Love the new colors in the email report!!  I always enjoy seeing something new every month...always keep it fresh and a new perspective.  When the emailed asked for suggestions, I hope this is the right spot to provide them.

  • Not sure if I've seen the a break down yet of gas milage based on city vs interstate speeds...maybe gas milage (as well as efficiency rating) 0-45 vs 55 to 70

Agreed Joel, perhaps include expected gas mileage for model, make and year for comparison. This can be an indicator of need for maintenance, etc. if low.

This is a good idea that maybe could be added tot he online weekly, monthly summaries as well. Along with expected mileage based on make, model and year, and possibly even driving pattern..

I would like to see stats on engine temp over time. correlated with outside temp, and intake temp. Similar to the new battery graph function you have. I drive an older car and seeing what is going on is critical to keeping it running.

Also the app should give a alert for things like low battery or high engine temp. Though the engine high alert might have to be manually set.

Thanks for the feedback, Jeff. Our Insights team is continuing to look into new data that can be shared that would be beneficial for needs like this.

Again, the feedback is greatly appreciated! Please let us know if any other ideas of things you'd like to see come to mind :)

Is any of this engine reporting being done by your 3rd party add-ins?
Photo of Jeff

Jeff, Alum

  • 14,146 Points 10k badge 2x thumb
Hey TC10,

Depending on your car, you may be able to get reports on engine data from mode 1 PIDs by using a third-party streaming application.

You can find these apps here: www.automatic.com/apps

At this time, these apps are only supported on iOS. However, OBD Fusion support for Android is set to release at any moment. They are just waiting on it being officially submitted as their current version to the Google Play Store.

Another simple thing that owners of old cars would appreciate. An alert for when it is time to get an oil change based on mileage and time since last, which ever comes first.

Thanks for the feedback, Jeff.

This is pretty highly-requested feature and something that we hope to provide down the road.

However, odometer information isn't always available by the car manufacturer, which is why we don't provide it at this time.

Thanks for the monthly report. This is a good monthly reminder. Let's see if we can go a little bit further with the information.

Since you know my make, model and year of vehicle it would be great if you analyzed my gas mileage by adding in what my mileage should be for highway mileage and in town driving. You have my mpg at various speeds for the month. In this case you can see that most of my month has been under 40 mph.

This gives me an indication if I have any maintenance issues as well as how well I'm doing based on your algorithm for good driving.

Also, I have to say, that the beeps for stopping and acceleration have had an effect on my stop/starts and my overall speed (slowing down). I may not agree with all of the beeps but, as you say, they are indicators, and they are working for me. Cheers.

I see that you have the Automatic on sale currently. I like the Automatic and it works well for me except for gas price which I understand will be fixed when you have support for Canada.  I use it here in Canada.
I look forward to the official support for Canada so that I can recommend it to friends to help boost your sales.

Recommendation / request: A comparison of mpg against other drivers of my car, and perhaps even weighted for driving conditions (all highway vs all city vs mix).

Driving score is... kinda interesting, but can be misleading. There's a hill on my commute, for example, that I use zero gas on but on which I routinely "waste" gas by going over 70mph.
Photo of Paul Chernoff

Paul Chernoff

  • 320 Points 250 badge 2x thumb
I am finding being dinged for going over 70MPH is annoying when I take my son to college (or take him home). The speed limit is 70MPH for around 100 miles (maybe more) so even though I try to stay just under 70mph via cruise control (and use OBD Fusion as a speedometer) I see my score for the week to drop from around 98 to 50.

This is great and very useful information. Thanks for the good work. Keep it up! One suggestion: For a lot of people (like me), the car(s) is usually shared between 2 (or more) people. So it'd be great if we could add other email addresses (viewers?) to the Automatic profile so they can also get these and other report and it doesn't feel like one email/person is getting all the load of scolding everyone else for their driving.

Having said that, having driving profiles (maybe with the smart tags) would also help knowing which driver is the one that's impacting the car score the most :-)

Thanks!

I've noticed in the App and on the Dashboard, its still tracking dollars spent on gas even though my Ford Fusion energi runs on Electric for 20-ish miles before switching to hybrid mode. For instance this morning my commute to work was 4.5 miles with $0.82 fuel cost - however MyFordMobile app shows 4.5 miles of EV travel with no fuel burned for the same trip.

This kinda makes the monthly email very contradictory to what actually happened while I was driving.

Jeff, Alum

  • 14,146 Points 10k badge 2x thumb
Hey Jason,

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, Automatic isn't completely optimized for measuring consumption costs when the car is using the electric portion of the engine.

We appreciate the feedback, and hopefully we'll be able to get there in the near future.

Thanks for reaching out, Brian.

At this time, Automatic is unable to detect/decode these types of maintenance needs. This is a highly requested feature, and we definitely hope to add the down the line.

Thanks again for the feedback!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Comparison with a Battery Electric Vehicle.

I work in California providing analysis for large fleets. I think it would be cool if the monthly summary report included 1) what percentage of the trips you took fall within the range of a battery electric vehicle and 2) How much you would have saved by going electric (gas price - price for electricity used...)
