This is the biggest update to Automatic for iPhone since our launch last year, featuring an all new design, low-fuel warnings, and adjustable speed feedback.

In a nutshell:
  • Redesigned from the ground up to be simpler and smarter
  • Track your car's fuel level and set custom low-fuel warnings (not available in all cars)
  • Customize speed warnings to alert you when you're driving too fast
  • Numerous bug fixes.

Redesigned from the ground up

At Automatic, we focus on creating products that help people drive safer and smarter. The user experience always comes first, and a big part of that is the design of the user interface. The new UI in Automatic 2.0 is lighter, more modern, and gives us the flexibility to design new features we couldn’t otherwise. You’ll see small touches throughout the app that we hope will elevate the experience every time you use it.

Fuel level and low-fuel warnings

One of the many benefits of building our own hardware is that we can extend it with new capabilities over time. Starting today, users with
supported cars will see their fuel level right in the iPhone app, along with an estimate of the miles left in the tank based on your driving habits. Automatic will warn you with a push notification when you’re low on fuel. You can customize when you’re warned, say, at 1/4 of a tank, or at 50 miles to empty. Automatic can even tweet, text message, or log low fuel level events with IFTTT.

About half of the cars connected with Automatic don’t report their fuel level through the diagnostic port. Unfortunately, these cars don’t support this feature. There isn’t a clear pattern for which cars report their fuel level and which don’t, so please check to see if yours is supported.

In general, we focus on building features that all cars support, but felt this one was too important to ignore. We’re sorry if you’re one of the unlucky ones, but don’t worry, we’re working on lots of other cool stuff that everyone will be able to use.

Adjustable speed feedback

Our community is a great place for our customers to share their experiences with us and each other, and to tell us which features they’d like to see in Automatic. One of the most popular requests was to let users adjust the speed at which Automatic warns you that you’re driving too fast. Some folks wanted to avoid speeding tickets in states with much higher speed limits, while others felt the optimum speed for their car is different than the pre-determined 70 MPH threshold.

Not only is the threshold adjustable, we improved how you’re warned that you’re driving too fast. Now, you’ll only hear the chirp once when you cross the threshold. The chirp won’t repeat for the rest of the trip unless you dip below the threshold and cross it again.

Keep in mind that for now your drive score is still impacted by how much time you spend over 70 MPH, regardless of your custom speed threshold. We’re already working on an update to address this issue, so stay tuned.

See the blog post or get the app.

By adjusting the speed alert to more than 70, does that change the speed threshold the affects your driving score?

For example, if I change it to 75 mph, and I drive home from work at 72 the entire way, what does my score look like?

whoops never mind, just saw in the app: "drive score is still based on 70 MPH"

Yep, that's the case for now, but we'll be releasing an update soon to address this. We decided to release the speed threshold feature now instead of waiting to release it simultaneously with the the Drive Score update. The latter is a much bigger project.

My 2.0 version crashes soon after startup. Installed 2.0 on top of 1.x Do I need to delete and reinstall completely. If so, do I lose any previous scores/history? Thanks.

Hi Sheldon. Sorry that you're experiencing a crash issue with 2.0. What model of iPhone are you using?

Can you try performing a clean install of the app? This requires you to completely delete the app from your phone and re-install it from the App Store.

Great some progress at last—although my model does not report the fuel level, at least others will benefit.
Still not picking up the most current trip just made with new V.20 although trips I made last week are now in the log. On the last trip, it "knew" I was currently driving—but no change to that ugly and rather confusing spinner—and also when the trip ended, but the trip does not appear as the latest trip.
Also still have the incredibly useless driving score dominating the display. Still no way to select units of distance as km, etc.

Hi Robert. We looked at your account, and it looks like your Link needs to update to the latest firmware. This is the reason why the speed threshold feature is not showing up for you.

It also looks like you need to run through vehicle setup again. To go through setup:

1) Tap "Set up another car..." in the User Settings menu and go through setup again. Be sure to not delete your car first as this can cause a server issue. The car profiles will merge once the app recognizes they have the same VIN.
2) Once you have finished setup, go for a drive and see if the app shows "Currently driving."

Since you haven't been using the app frequently, this process will take some time as the Link will need to dump old data. The update and dumping process should be completed within the next day or so of driving and the best thing to do will be to continue driving as often as you can and making sure the app is on.  Here's more information on how firmware updates work.

My 2.0 version crashes soon after startup. I installed the 2.0 update and it gives me the same issues as the 1.x did. I did a delete and reinstall of the 1.x a little while ago to fix the problem (and it did, but it erased all my data), but now it is happening in 2.0...can someone fix this ongoing bug?? I have an iPhone 5 64G. I don't want to have to go through the process of deleting, reinstalling going into all my cars and rebuilding it again, etc. There has to be a way to fix this issue...!!

I just got an email back from one of your support team members. I deleted the app from my phone (though it says the data will be deleted, it won't because you are storing that data in the cloud). So I deleted the app, went back to the app store and downloaded it again, logged in and it doesn't crash...I assume there is something in your code because this happened to me in the older version and in this newer version. I am just glad I am not losing my data anymore :). All good for now...

The 2.0 update lost the connection to my link device. I'm on an iPhone 4s and I thin k this has happened before but I couldn't put the pieces together.

I KNOW my link last night was working fine. This morning I pushed the update to my phone and after 5 minutes of driving this morning I saw my car was still in my garage from when I left it last night. I had to "Set up another car" (shouldn't that be "setup"?) Once I re-established the link it matched to my existing car entry in the App (Model, Color etc), I was expecting it to add a different car with default colors etc.

Not sure if you can understand why it loses my configuration during upgrades. Perhaps the link can send a tone when the car is started to indicate there is NO link to any device to remind me something has gone wrong.

Hi Howard. Sorry for the hassles on this. We've identified the issue causing some folks to lose their previous settings and data. This should be addressed with the next update.

Regarding going through "Set up another car" - that worked as intended. Once it recognizes the VIN it merges it with the previous settings and data preserved in your account on our server.

We also had some slight trip processing delays earlier today due to server slow-down so that may have contributed to your experience this morning.

Is everything working properly now? Thanks so much for your patience!

Hi Mark. Did you by any chance remove your car from the app? Tech Support thinks this may be the issue. They say you need to log out and log back in. This may prompt you to go through setup again. Please follow the steps through setup - it will require you to unplug your Link first. Once you get through setup you should see the feature. If you still don't, please email help@automatic.com so Tech Support can look into this further.

Used 1.0 for 6 months and upgraded to 2.0 yesterday. Took first trip to work today for 31 miles, it remained stuck on calculating trip for over 3 hours and then lost the trip. :( This happens about 10% of the time on my iPhone 5 using latest iOS.

I have religiously used Automatic for every drive since receiving it as a gift this past Christmas. I have a 2011 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Sport Edition. I will give Automatic kudos for radically changing my driving habits from the past 25+ years. I drive 31 miles each way to work every day, five days a week in northern California. I use to average 75-80 MPH routinely. I made a commitment the day I received automatic to drive at 70 MPH or lower, change the time I leave for appointments to ensure I did not have to exceed 70 MPH. I now set cruise control routinely at 69 MPH. I combine my Automatic use with WAZE for every trip. It is an awesome combination. The change in average speed has taken my average fuel use from 30 MPG to 34.5 MPG, a 15% increase. This translates to an average of 63 extra miles out of 14 gallon tank of gas, or approximately 2 gallons. That equates to ~$400/year in savings, not shabby.

Here are the issues, I HATE the incredibly sensitive braking and rapid acceleration detection points of Automatic! They have very, very little to do with gas savings and all they do is trash your driving score. I am not asking for the app and accelerometer to allow cars to punch the accelerator from every start or not detect when you slam on the brakes. However, the unit detects braking or acceleration "fouls" at a completely unrealistic level. The level of sensitivity with which I have to drive my Mini to not make the unit beep is abhorrent and completely unrealistic. I can be slowing down on a 25 MPH residential street for a stop sign and use extensive distance (100+ yards) and if I even barely apply pressure to my massive JCW sport brakes the unit will indicate a braking foul routinely. I am interested in saving gas, driving better, etc., but the sensitivity of the unit and inability of the app to program thresholds for these items that tailor realistically to my car are getting me thinking it is time to disconnect and ditch Automatic. I can simply maintain my average driving habits, but ditch hearing the beep and seeing terrible scores when I am driving completely reasonably. The reality is I do not look at automatic or use it during hte drive, I use Waze exclusively. I only check Automatic occasionally after trips, and again find it loses about 10-15% of them (another major problem). It absolutely defeats the purpose of trying to pursue a score if my driving habits are very sane and controlled, but the unit calls a "foul" at incredibly easy levels because it is not setup for the vehicle in use.

Hi Tony. Thanks for reporting this to us. Are you consistently not receiving audio alerts for hard brakes/accels? If no, do you remember the day and time in which you didn't receive an alert?
Photo of Tony Trotter

Tony Trotter

  • 114 Points 100 badge 2x thumb
I just got this and only got 2 notifications in the past 2 days (1 acceleration & 1 hard brake). I still don't know what made that 1 acceleration different from the others that I thought could/should have been. The hard braking was due to a near emergency stop but I have "tested" braking hard and nothing is captured. The overspeed works perfectly. I have reseated the unit twice, rebooted the phone, and restarted the app.

Hi again Tony. Tech support took a look at your account, and it looks like you're not crossing the threshold for hard breaks and accelerations so that is why you're not receiving alerts. You may have some interest in this related thread on making the alert thresholds more sensitive.

Hi Adam - as I said above to Steve, this is something we're very aware of. I know how annoying that can be. Initially, we needed to base the thresholds on some set of average standardized data. This means it's pretty accurate on most cars using Automatic but not on ALL cars. Over time, we plan to refine this threshold based on specific car type. Here's a topic with more conversation around this issue.

Hi Phil, thanks for reporting this. It looks like you might need to re-setup your car again, without first deleting the car. You can do this by by tapping "Set up another car..." in the app and completing setup. Again, DO NOT REMOVE your vehicle from your account first as this may cause database issues. When our system recognizes the same VIN, it will merge your data. Hope this helps and let us know if you run into further issues.

In 2.0 there are a lot of bugs when using ios 8. For some reason it is saying that airplane mode is on and the error to turn off airplane mode pops up even if it is on or off. Also the check engine light section is also messed up as you see from the picture attached. These are some os 8 errors i think i found. I also am not sure if this is a problem or not but at the beginning of the week the new range section said 302 miles then it went up to 306 then down to 297 when i drove over 65 miles

My device will not process any trips. The app and the device seem to sync up as the app displays "Currently driving..." or whatever the text reads. When I park it seems to determine my location but then after sitting on "Processing latest trip..." for about 20-25 seconds it just quits to "Failed. Tap to Retry." round and round forever.

Additionally the low fuel setting does not seem to be working for my car at all. When I updated to 2.0 I was about 15 miles into a brand new tank and I got an alert that I had zero fuel. Every time I start my car the low fuel warning goes off, which has the unpleasant side effect of jacking ALL volume controls to maximum. My podcast suddenly starts blowing out my speakers (running aux cable from iPhone 5s to car stereo) and whatever app I open after getting out of the car is ALSO at max volume. I've "fixed" this by shutting off low fuel warnings, but I wanted to at least let you know what's happening.

I have tried reseating the Automatic device, reinstalling the app, restarting the phone but the app (or the device) just will *not* show me my trips. If there's a different place I should post this point me to it and I'd be glad to help out.

Thanks for reporting this to us, Jeremy. Please see this FAQ topic for an explanation regarding the fuel range discrepancy you're observing. It's very possible that your car's dashboard is underestimating the amount of fuel in your vehicle while the app may be overestimating. The app currently uses the last 15 hours of your driving data from your car to calculate the estimated range, and as you continue to drive while using Automatic, the estimated fuel range readout should become more reliable. We'll continue to refine this feature in future updates, but let us know if you continue to notice a large discrepancy.
