Your data is securely stored on Automatic’s servers, also sometimes referred to as "the cloud". We store your data for several reasons.

First, storing this data in the cloud lets you switch phones (the next iPhone, say, or from one Android phone to another) at any time and keep using Automatic without any additional setup and without losing any data. All your cars and trips will just appear on-screen once you log in to your user account on the new phone.

Second, the algorithm that correlates and processes the data from your car and smartphone is constantly being tested and improved. If the data weren't on Automatic's servers, we'd have no way of knowing how our algorithms are doing, nor how to improve them.

Additionally, we need to look at the data to help users troubleshoot issues and bugs. Without access to the trip data, we would be effectively blind when trying to provide technical support.

Finally, we've released an API so users can extract their own data to view it in a different format and so developers can create new and useful tools for themselves and potentially others. The API would be useless if everyone's data were trapped just on their phones.
