I've got a gen2 I no longer need.

This raises a good question ... how do you dissociate a device from your account so you can resell it?

Haven't really thought about it. Have a look on eBay for what they're going for used and make me an offer. :-)

Hi Andres and ed1chandler,

The Automatic adapter isn't associated with your account, so there isn't anything that you need to do if you're going to sell it or give it away. Your data is tied to your account, not the adapter, so when the new owner creates their own Automatic account they won't have access to your data.

I hope this helps!

Hey, Derrick.

I'd be willing to accept everything after the first comma, but the adapter is *absolutely* tied to your account - otherwise the back end wouldn't know to whose account new data should be written.

Now once the data is written back to your servers, sure, it no longer needs to be associated with the device, and there's no way for the device to access that data, but until the data is offloaded from the device to your back end - either using the phone (G1/G2) or the device's own connection (Pro) - "your" data is on the device and potentially accessible.

That association may break when the new owner associates the device with his/her account, but there's still the question of any data cached on the device and - in the case of the Pro - what happens to new data you receive before the new owner associates the device with his/her account.

So "there's nothing you need to do when you sell it" may be correct, but "the device is not associated with your account" is almost certainly not.

Hi Ed. I believe what Derrick meant is that the only way to access your data is by logging into your account via the app or Web Dashboard, as the adapter is not an open pipe to your account. While it does have some data storage functionality built in, this is only to preserve drive data that was collected while not connected so that it can later be synced with your account -- this it to prevent "missed trips". Unsynced data only sticks around on the adapter to be processed into a trip for 28 calendar days. We have some safeguards in place to ensure that a new Automatic account that sets up on a used adapter that might have some recent but previous unsynced trips does not receive those trips in their app.

Bingo. That last bit about "some safeguards" was the missing piece. Still, a factory reset option would be swell. Thanks.

Andres, Amazon is still selling our Gen 2 adapter. I do not recommend that anyone purchase a Gen 1 adapter at this point.

Hi Tony. I removed your post as you included your email address. This community is a public platform and as such we advise folks to not post private information here. It's best to use an actual seller's marketplace to resell your adapters. Thanks.
