Manually add gas fill up

Since some older cars don't support reporting the fuel level in the gas tank (my 2003 CRV for example) a way to manually add when the tank is full/amount added would provide the ability to calculate an estimate on how much gas is left in the tank based on the fuel used. I assume the amount of fuel used on a trip is detected since MPG and cost per trip is available.

Since you can add in your fill-ups, this should be an easy calculation but it would not be 100% accurate.  Since the mpg is only average and not in particular to that particular gas fill-up.  For example, if you go up a bunch of hills 1 week and all city driving vs highway miles and straight roads this would vary greatly.

The only way would be to calculate it in real-time.  I am just speaking out loud on my thoughts on this.  Maybe a fill-up reminder could be done from the worst mpg average that you have for that vehicle so no matter what, when the reminder goes off its before the gas is empty.

Eric, which adapter do you have? With the Pro & Lite adapters and our new app, you can already add your fill up manually. But Shawn's right that if we used that for calculating how much fuel you have left in your tank, there would be a lot of room for error based on a number of variables. Our 1st & 2nd gen adapters can tell you your fuel level and give you a low fuel warning but only if your car detects fill-ups and reports them via the OBD port -- which only about 50% of cars do.

Also, here's a FAQ about how we calculate the cost of a trip.

Amy,

I have the gen 2 device so it appears that I'm out of luck with even adding a fill up manually?  If that is the case I'm disappointed in Automatic.  I can't image this is a difficult feature to add to the software but having it only available for new devices is bothersome.  I hope this isn't an indication of the future for those of us who have older devices.

Hi Eric. The Gen 2 adapter & Classic app will continue to be supported with the current functionality but at this time there are no plans for adding new features.

Well my disappointment grows with each message.  I work in IT and understand the need to move forward with new products and the difficulties maintaining feature parity between old and new versions.   However the decision to tell to your existing customer base less than TWO MONTHS after releasing an updated product that they aren't going to get any new features makes me regret buying the device.  What's next, will the Dashboard site become unavailable to Gen1 and Gen2 device users in the next 6 months?  While I like the Automatic product I will probably not be buying another device from your company in the future.

Eric - I'm confused by your post. I'm not sure what you mean about "less than two months after releasing an updated product"? Gen 2 was launched in May 2015. The next new product was Pro which launched in August 2016. It was at that point that we had to make the decision we made about continuing to support the Classic app & Gen 2 while not adding new features to it.

There's no reason the Web Dashboard would become unavailable for Gen 1 & Gen 2 users. Dashboard Labs is another set of features available to all customers as well as most third-party apps.
