Thanks for the idea, Hillary. The SMS confirmation is required by Nest for any state changes (Home/Away), and it must be confirmed on a trip-by-trip basis. We would like to change this though, and we're working with Nest to make this possible in the future.

If you set up a rule with the "Precondition for ETA" Nest event, SMS confirmation is not required (you won't have to reply in order to trigger the rule). You will, however, receive an SMS alerting you that the rule has successfully triggered.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled How do I turn off texts to control my Nest thermostat?.

I have Automatic programmed for a response back to text "YES or No" when switching from Home and Away. Can I change the programming and have Automatic switch without the need to text back?

Hi Dave. There isn't a way to turn off these text messages at the moment. State changes to your Nest thermostat must be confirmed by SMS (it's a requirement from Nest), but we hope to change this in the future.
