Since you added in being able to name your location, It would be awesome if you could also put a note on the trip to say something short about what you did at that location as an option.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jeremy. So it becomes a little travelog, I guess? That'd be cool.

This is a great idea. Adding details about the drive like average/max speeds would also help in comparing driving styles. For example; is there any benefit to me driving 60 mph rather than 55 mph, or is the difference in travel time insignificant?

Thanks for chiming in, Tim. You may also have some interest in checking out this related idea topic in regards to your idea about the impact on speeding has any affect on travel time.

How's the progress on this? I go to many different places a day. It would be nice to put a note in as to where it was and what I did there.

Hi Adam! This idea is currently set as "not planned" but if we see enough demand for it, this could change in the future.

As I understand it, adding notes is critical for logging trips as business deductions. Is there a compatible app that offers this option?

Hi Emily,

Thanks for reaching out!

At this time, Automatic doesn't provide a way to include a note about trips. However, one of the expensing apps from our app gallery may be able to provide a way to enter this data. Unfortunately, I do not use any of these so I don't know from personal experience, but I am hoping to hear back from a member of our team who works more closely with those products—since they are expensing products, I imagine they offer some way of adding a note to trips added from Automatic.

However, even if the expensing product features note adding, it won't be possible to add the note from within Automatic. The only way to add a note is from within the expensing product's platform if they offer such a feature.

Once I have more information, I'll follow up. Thanks for your feedback, Emily!

Jeff, first off - kudos to you and your team. I'm very impressed with what you've accomplished with this device! nOw, unfortunately I was a little naive at the store and thought that mileage reports was the whole point of this when I bought it. It looks like that was not your intent, so I understand it's on me not you, but many other mileage trackers whole existance (like mileIQ, which I use and was hoping to replace today) is to save a trip's distance and route data, add a note, and tag as business, medical, charity, or personal. (Personal should have misc and Commute, minimum). Then you can spit out monthly reports and annual reports fully compliant with the IRS. The data you have includes distance, start and end, vehicle, etc.. So simply adding the tags and notes fields per record would make this the complete tool!

Here's my ideal situation. Drive.. Stop car, key off triggers a push notification to iphone/apple watch with options to select the drive type (Business, Medical, Charitable, Commute, Personal) and a note field to type or dictate the purpose of the drive. Save button and it's good to go. Online you can export this data to reports grouped by drive type. This would help thousands of people stay current on their mileage and not fall behind since it's prompting you at the end of the drive, helping you stay current. It's such a nightmare entering a months worth of drive data after the fact, and something's always missing!! PLEASE tell me you and your app-geniuses can implement that!! ;) That would absolutely kill it in the mileage market.

Thanks for creating what is clearly a very clever device and software integration!

Hey Matt,

Thanks for reaching out and we greatly appreciate your feedback so far with Automatic.

At this time, you are correct that you cannot do more than business tagging with the Automatic application. Custom tags is something that has been requested here before, and is something we are hoping to implement into a future version of Automatic.

Our team is currently hard at work on the next major version of the app, and we are looking at how we can implement many of the requested features from our users. This is definitely one we are aware of, and I will pass along your feedback so they know this is still something our users are looking to get out of the product.

Thanks again, Matt! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hey Matt,

I just wanted to follow up with a possible solution.

While it isn't a feature of the Automatic Core application, one of the third party apps you can integrate with Automatic is TripDots (only supported on iOS):

"Tripdots organizes and manages your driving history to help you maximize expense reimbursements and maximize your refunds from driving. Tripdots allows you to automatically or manually track all your driving. You can apply custom tags to your trips and it will deliver detailed expense reports and driving logs daily, weekly or monthly for your expense reimbursements and deductions.

With Automatic, Tripdots will receive the exact route you took instead of mileage estimates or the shortest route between GPS coordinates, ensuring your expenses are accurate, maximized, and verifiable.

Tripdots is free to track up to 50 trips per month. For unlimited tracking, upgrade plans are available. Visit the website for pricing information."

We hope this helps as a solution :)

Is there an Android app similar to Tripdots that would work with Automatic?

Hey Brandon,

Thanks for reaching out. This isn't a feature we plan to add right now, but we appreciate the feedback and will continue to reconsider as more and more people request such a feature.

In the meantime, however, I recommend taking a look at the post above regarding TripDots. If you are an iOS users, TripDots is a great integration to accomplish this while using Automatic. Unfortunately, if you are on Android, this isn't a supported third-party app, but we are always looking for partners who offer a similar service to provide something like TripDots for our Android users.

Thanks!

I guess if i want to pay an additional 6.99 a month for it, that would be a solution.  99$ for a device that tracks your trips gives a selection for business but no  note logging for tax purposes with business.  Why have the business selection if you cant fill in a few details that show why it qualified for business.  Guess the pen and paper wins again.  :/ unless i want to shell out more money for a 3rd party app.  Such is life.

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for the feedback and we absolutely understand that may not be a fit for everyone—it's just a solution that many users find helpful for this type of case. The ability to tag trips as Business was a recent addition, so that is why it may seem somewhat incomplete. We are continuing to evaluate how to develop it for future versions of the application.

Another option you have is using IFTTT to automatically upload all of your trips to a Google Spreadsheet, where you could add a column to include notes for business trips. While you wouldn't be able to make these edits from Automatic, you could add the Google Sheets application to your mobile device or edit a note about that trip the next time you are at the computer. You would also need to manually remove all trips that are not business trips.

For more on IFTTT, please see this FAQ: Automatic and IFTTT

And here is a formula you could use: Export Automatic trips to Google Sheets
