Parking reminder feature requests

The parking thing seems to be working well, but Google implemented the same thing not too long ago for their Google Now service.

Two feature requests:

1. Give an option to disable this feature. Personally, I prefer going to the Google Now screen to see that info rather than having it on all the time on Automatic's persistent notification.

2. Google Now has an option where you can hide that info if you are at home or work. I don't need to see where I parked if my car is sitting in my garage.

Hi estmatic. Thanks for the feedback on the parking reminder feature, you bring up some valid points! We'll keep these thoughts in mind as we continue to develop and refine the feature on Android.

If you'd like to turn off the persistent notification, you can do so by toggling the “Show system-tray notification” setting found in the user settings menu. Just be aware that if you turn the notification off, you won't be able to receive walking directions to your car or share its location with others. You can also minimize the map by either pinching or swiping down on it with two fingers.

I agree. Doesn't make any sense to notify users that they've parked their car at home. There should be an option to suppress certain addresses. Better still, the app could recognize address(es) that are used frequently and offer to silence these.

Thanks for the idea, dom.layfield. Good point about suppressing the feature for frequently visited locations such as home. Unless you have a teen that also uses your car ;)

We'll keep this feedback in mind!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
parking reminder on android.

Please give us an option to disable this feature. I do nt need to have a reminder and a map taking up a HUGE amount of screen real estate in my notification bar letting me know where my car is when I'm parked at home.

Hi Leif! It's possible to turn off the parking reminder, but keep in mind that turning the feature off can affect the performance of Crash Alert. Please see this FAQ for more details as to why this is the case. You also won't be able to receive walking directions to your car or share its location with others. You can also minimize the map by either pinching or swiping down on it with two fingers.

Hi Tom,

The issue (at least for me) is not the notification sitting in the status bar, nor even that it tells me the address. The issue is that the notification has a huge frigging map as part of it.

My notifications get filled pretty quickly with work email, personal email, meetings, and things coming in from If This Then That (GitHub pull requests, notification of home automation events, etc.) or Tasker. So I really don't mind seeing the automatic notification at the top of the tray if that is what is required to make background drive capture be enabled - but there really should be a way for a user to choose whether that notification displays a huge map so that the notification uses about 45% of my total screen (on a Samsung Galaxy S4), or whether it is just a normal sized notification.

If the only solution to not having a huge notification is to turn off the ability for background trip capture, then the app and device will really become useless to me, and I might as well get rid of them.

The parking feature was one that the Automatic team pushed out. Unlike others in this thread, I don't think it is bad to do something that Google Now does - but if you are going to do it, you need to do it better to give me value. Having something that sits in the status bar all the time while I am at work or home and shows me that I am parked where I know I always park, is not super useful to me, but for an MVP for a feature, I think it is a good start - however having the notification bar with the huge map, is a severe detractor to the feature and the app in general.

Thanks for your post, Shawn. I have some good news for you, you can actually minimize the map on the notification by either pinching or swiping down on it with two fingers. My last post was 7 months ago, but we've since updated the FAQ to include this information. I hope this helps!

So, nothing seems to have changed in regards to this feature in two years. I understand that the notification has to be there, that doesn't bother me, but could we at least get an option to disable the map? I realize it may be valuable to some people... it's not to me. I also know you can pinch to minimize it, but it just ends up auto-expanding again.

Hey estmatic,

Thanks for bringing this topic back up and expressing your concerns here.

I spoke with our Android team and they said that this is something they will consider in a future version of the Android application. When this idea was originally proposed by you, it was marked as Not Planned and that was because at the time, making such a change wasn't a pressing need.

Today, that is still the case (this being a pressing need for all users), but we are in a better position today than we were before to start dedicating resources to making such settings changes. Our Android team has moved this over to Under Consideration, and will look to see if it is something they can accomplish while tackling some of their bigger projects.

To clarify, I think it used to bug me more because those constant notifications always had an icon showing on the bar. Now they don't. Sometimes you see a little faded dot, but otherwise you only see them when you pull down.

I have no problem with the notification itself, and having the general location where you last parked could be useful. I would just like the option of removing the map.
