USAA is sending me a "License+" adapter for one of my 16 year old drivers. Presumably this will be a Gen2 adapter? Unfortunately I have 2 16 year old drivers, with their own cars. I did find a Gen2 adapter on Amazon, but if I understand it correctly, I could buy a Pro and still use License+ for the 2nd child by setting her up on the one USAA is sending, then transfer her to the Pro? I'd hate to buy an 2nd older unit when it seems useful beyond the 100 hours of License+...

The one from USAA will take a few weeks, so I'm not certain what model they are sending- but it seems it MUST be Gen1 or Gen2 since it is expressly for License+.

And to clarify, I know the Gen2 (or Gen1) will work beyond the 100 hours with the old app, it's more that if I BUY one, I would want to buy the latest model for future compatibility. The free one can be whatever...

Hi Michael-

Great question and very insightful of you! Looks like you've done your homework. :) Yes, what you're suggesting should work. You DO need a Gen 2 adapter to initially set up License+, but you can continue using L+ with a Pro adapter after that. So here's what it would look like:

1. Both 16-year-olds take turns setting up the single Gen 2 adapter on their respective cars in their respective user accounts with the Automatic Classic app. (icon has a grey background)

2. Both 16-year-olds download the L+ app and go through L+ setup, including selecting their Coach. (Unfortunately, the Coach< >Student relationship is one to one.)

3. One (lucky?) 16-year-old then sets up the Pro adapter with the new Automatic app (icon has a dark blue background) but continues using License+.

A thing to keep in mind is that, while they'll both get all the driving behavior feedback in their License+ app and you'll see it in the Coach Dashboards, only the driver who's continuing to use the Gen 2 adapter & Classic app will get the real-time feedback. That's the beeps they hear from the adapter if they accelerate too hard, brake too hard or drive over the chosen speed limit while they're driving. What the Pro adapter provides, though, is real-time tracking of the car as it's being driven to anyone logged into their account in the Automatic app on a supported mobile phone. Also, because the Pro is 3G connected, every trip will get logged in real time, even if they forgot their phone or Bluetooth didn't connect. That means that they should always be able to see where their car is parked. If the Gen 2 driver doesn't connect on a drive (a thing that can happen from time to time with a Bluetooth connected device) they won't get an updated parking location after their trip ends. (Any missed trips & data will load in later after they reconnect.) The Pro is not impervious to connection issues, but it's generally more consistently reliable.

Just things to consider when deciding who ultimately gets which adapter. :)  Let me know if you have any other questions!

Two 16-year-old drivers. Wow! Good luck! (My son just turned 15 so I'm not far from facing that.)

p.s. We have a more generous return policy than Amazon, so if you don't need same day shipping or other crazy feats of shipping magic that Amazon manages, you may want to order from our website directly in the event both teens end up wanting the Gen 2 experience.
