Having the app be able to tell me that (or provide information that lets me figure out) leaving the house five minutes earlier would on average decrease my commute time by 15 minutes would be really useful information.

Ideally the app would be able to display a chart that shows trip time (minutes on Y axis) and departure time (say 6:00AM to 7:00AM in 5 minute increments on X axis)

The trips times would be averaged for all trips that departed at that time from Home and arrived at Work,

Or just allow the data to be exported and I can create my own graphs and trip prediction systems.

Google Now on smartphones is already doing it, but I agree, this is one of those "killer app" functionalities that would really give Automatic an edge

I love this idea, @gamassey. "Giving you the data" is likely to come much sooner than building out this functionality in the app but it would sure be cool if we could include this at some point!

Thanks for the thoughtful write-up and the graph (is the data real, btw? if so, you better leave no later than 6:25!). We're definitely thinking along these lines. Our goal is to give drivers information and insight to help them make better choices about their driving, so stay tuned. :)

The tricky part (there is always a tricky part) is making the algorithm smart enough to ignore the outliers (the morning the cattle truck flipped over and had cow all over the express way). It also needs to understand that traffic varies with season (very light during summer) and weather (terrible when it is raining!). An interesting problem indeed.

I am looking forward to seeing the app become more and more valuable!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Average speed and mileage.

Why not track average speed and time of day and time for travel which would be useful for commutes and frequently taken routes to figure out the best times and the variation in times and speeds for the trips.

Even if the app doesn't predict the best time to leave on a commute it would be useful to have it display the elapsed time and average speed for any trip.

Great point, Michael. As a former commuter who drove 40 miles one way, I figured out my ideal departure time (in order to avoid traffic) by assessing my total trip time each day.
