I'm trying to decide on a discrete car tracker for my son. I'm currently looking at the Verizon Hum, the MOTOSafety, and the Zubie. Why should I choose the Automatic?

Hi Kelly, Automatic is not designed to be a tracking device that the driver is unaware of and isn't marketed as such so I don't want to pretend to argue for it as the right solution for your needs. The Automatic Pro does have a 3G connection and does allow you to see where your car is at any time via the app on your phone, regardless of whether or not the driver has a phone with them or is connected to the adapter. All of this without a subscription or any ongoing fees. Additionally, it provides other features such Check Engine Light diagnosis, Crash Alert, fill-up logging, Driving Insights, and more.

However, it also sends out a Bluetooth signal as it uses a Bluetooth connecting for that initial setup with a phone and when diagnosing and clearing the Check Engine Light. It's possible that a savvy person might notice "Automatic" when looking at nearby available Bluetooth devices in the Bluetooth menu on their smartphone. Also, if they notice the adapter and yank it out, it will stop tracking. There is not a notification if the adapter has been unplugged as we don't have a clear way of detecting that it's happened.

Hi Amy, I appreciate your candor. Unfortunately, if asked, most children would prefer not to be monitored. But, as a caring and responsible parent, my primary mission is to safeguard my son and those who may be affected by his actions or inexperience. Sometimes that requires a certain level of discretion, especially if the system is easily disabled.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised that your device doesn't provide tamper notification, as that is a standard feature on nearly all competitive devices.

I've noticed in several YouTube videos that your device produces an audible tone when the driver performs an unsafe maneuver, like rapid acceleration, hard breaking, and excessive speed. While I still want to be notified of such occurrences, is it possible to disable the onboard alert?

Hi Kelly. The Automatic Pro doesn't have any audio alerts other than the beep it emits to indicate it's receiving power from the car when you first plug it in. The videos you saw would've been for our original products and the Automatic Classic app which included Efficiency Coaching with audible alerts. Those alerts can be turned off in the app, however, the original adapters were Bluetooth-only and did not include any remote live tracking of a drive. Every drive relied on a successful Bluetooth connection with a phone that had been set up with the adapter.

I understand your desire for a tamper-proof product and perhaps some day we'll have something that fulfills that need. But as I mentioned before, this is not a use-case our first cellular product was designed for and thus it may not have the same features as products that are specifically geared towards discreet tracking of other drivers.
