Note: This only applies to the 1st and 2nd Generation Automatic adapters.TAG PLACES YOU VISIT OFTEN● Define custom location names● Choose from 3 default tags (Home, Work School)BRIEF STOPS● When you stop for less than 15 minutes between trips, those trips will be grouped in the timelineThe trip timeline is at the heart of the Automatic app but can get cluttered with long addresses and trip segments caused by brief stops along a longer trip. We address both of these issues in this release. You can now name to any location you drive to. Just tap the little pencil icon next to the location and edit the label. You only need to do this once to update every location in your timeline within 100 meters (328 ft). Common locations like home, work, and school are just a tap away. Next, trips with brief stops between them (e.g. from home to the gas station to work) no longer appear as multiple trips in the timeline. Instead, when you stop for less than 15 minutes between trips, the timeline will group them into a single multi-segment trip. If you’d prefer to see trips individually, you can adjust the “Brief Stops” switch in settings. We’re looking into other ways to make the timeline better reflect how people think about their trips, so we’d appreciate your input!Click here to see an overview of all new features in v1.2.

Excellent update!

Really love the brief stops feature; sometimes I left my car running on purpose at a brief stop, just so the trip would be contiguous.

Love the place names; it'll make looking at my paths much more sane and the built-in shortcuts are a thoughtful convenience. (The pencil seemed too tiny to hit accurately until I realized you can hit anywhere on the address line--doh.)

Love the better map of where I parked, although since the Normal/Satellite is a "slider" it is a little odd that you get the opposite of the one you tap...makes sense if you slide it the way you want it.

And I like the score details -- easy access to more (organized) data is great. (I do feel a little bad that I'm "in the bottom" with my seemingly great 95 score right now. :-)

Keep up the great work!

Sounds like something's off with that percentile ranking, but it should correct itself after the next time you drive.

Thanks and you're right: now I'm in the top 35% (lots of good drivers out there I guess. :-)

That's actually an interesting data point we've noticed. Since we launched the average drive score has greatly improved! Even as the user base has grown. Seems like it's really working at making people better drivers. :)

WOW! I love the new features you all added. It just keeps getting better and better!!! Thanks so much Amy (and of course the peeps who coded this update). It really is great. The update summed up a 1000+ mile trip I had over the Thanksgiving holiday beautifully and with the added location names I'm just loving the app even more!

This is an amazing update! I really love it. I worked on such apps until 3 years ago and you guys are on the right track!

But as always I also have an "issue" to report: I work in the city center and go to the gym just out of the city. So the trip over there takes me a 2.4 miles but somehow the new naming convention for frequently visited locations thinks that those two locations are one and the same. I agree that on the map if you would take a straight line that the distance between the two locations is obviously less than 2.4 miles maybe even closer to 1 mile but still I find this range pretty big to distinguish a locations. I would not park my car a mile from where I needed to be. And even if I were I wouldn't want it to be marked as that location. (P.S. If you like I could send in a ticket with some trip timelines so you can investigate)

But all in all great update. Love the new ranking. It really encourages you to get to the top and it is also great to see which days I was burning my money and which days I was saving up on gas money.

Keep up the good work.

This is exciting but needs to have option to email monthly mileage report in excel for IRS. Then I can take report and add what trips r for and save for IRS. I would be buying one for all on our team if u had this feature.

It would be great if there were a way to add a general class of tags, like "shopping", "exercise", etc., beyond the fairly specific ones for home, work, and school.

In our family of 5, 4 of us play hockey, but the actual locations differ. It would be great to be able to add a "Hockey" tag so that I could show my sons how much money we spend each year toting them around to play! Seriously though these general tags might be a nice touch beyond the specific ones.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Scott. You can set a custom location rather than using the suggested ones in the app. So you could set "Hockey" as location tag. Would that do the trick?

I didnt mean to be cryptic. Sorry.

My point is I'd like to have "both". One (i.e., fairly descriptive) tag that notes the actual location (e.g, a particular hockey rink) and one that just generalizes it as Hockey.

I can imagine other reasons why such a system would be useful, e.g., if you go to a certain place to do multiple things. You'd want to know the actual location, and sometimes tag it as one thing, and sometimes the other.

Anyway, this isn't a huge problem. Just reflecting on what has been provided as a feature and dreaming of more.

this product looks awesome- i have not tried it yet, but on my list of must haves.

i would like to see a feature that collects travel time information and allows analysis by time of day, season, etc. so I can plan the most likely route to get me to work and home and avoid school buses, traffic jams, etc. I have over 10 different paths I can take to work and would like Automatic to automatically show me path options based on actual historical data (not google forecasts)...

That's a great suggestion and would definitely fit in line with our mission of helping you save money when driving. There's at least one app that does this already though, check out Waze if you haven't yet. https://www.waze.com What we would most likely do is integrate with an existing service that performs that functionality. An API is definitely in our future, we're excited to see what developers will do with it once we're ready.

I really wish this product logged all the addresses that you went to and the miles between locations so I could use it to track my mileage for business expenses. If I understand correctly I would have to input every new location. I'm a Realtor and I visit 10 new addresses a day and need to keep track of each address and the mileage in between.

It will automatically grab a location for where your trip begins or ends. It's just that you can also customize what you want to call that location. Also, we're looking into features that will help facilitate tracking your trip data for business and tax purposes. Additionally, you can get all that data now via our API which is in alpha.

Hoping to see merged segments in the next Android update, too!

How are stops represented in the API?

Hi Michael. There's no ETA for custom labels in the web dashboard, but it's something we're planning to add in a future update to the dashboard. Here's a related discussion on this feature request.

Can the 15 minute timer be modified to something longer like 30 minutes? I drive a truck and it takes longer than 15 minutes to fill the tank. :)

Thanks

Hi there, Wayne. Welcome to the community. We don't have current plans to change the brief stops timeframe, but if we see enough demand for the feature/option, our plans could be revised. Feel free to also chime in on this related idea to show your support :)

I think this would be a great feature... Perhaps it could prompt (Is this is brief stop?) after it is completed and "learn" the user's stopping pattern. I imagine I'd like to classify an entire "Errands" trip as "errands" even if it's a couple hours between stops. Sounds like a good place to be adaptable to user preferences. Cheers!

Will the location name/tagging ever come to Android?

Is this feature deprecated now? I no longer see the pencil on the iOS app. And I've moved and changed jobs since I first named a location "Home", so now every time I go home, so now my most popular locations are not able to be tagged with custom location names.

Hi Jonathan,

This feature is still alive and well in the iOS app.

Is there any chance you are zoomed into your screen at all? The pencil should be on the right side after opening the individual trip from the list.

Please note that if you are on an iPhone and you have the screen set for "Zoomed" (Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Display Zoom), the pencil icon will not appear.  It will  only show currently in "Standard" view.  This will need to be addressed by the programmers in order to resolve this issue.

I'd really like to see the ability to use the app or web interface to select and combine segments into one trip.  I generally take long trips for work and this would help greatly for reporting mileage.  The last trip of over 1100 miles has many segments for fuel stops, meals etc.

Thanks!

Hi, Christian. We have this feature. It was implemented a long time ago. It's called "Brief Stops". It may not work for stops as long as a meal (depending on how fast you eat!) but it will definitely work for fuel stops and other quick stops. You can read more about it here

Hi MattMatheus - This feature doesn't exist at all in our new app (for iOS or Android) and for now, we don't have plans to add new features to the Classic app.

Today (2017-01-01) I cannot find how to add location names in the Automatic app v3.4.0 on iOS 10. Has something in the interface changed? How can I name locations in the app, or in the dashboard?

Thank you,

-Daniel

Hi Daniel -

This is an old thread (from 2013) about our previous versions. The current app doesn't have location naming right now. You can find out more about the differences here and you can chime in on an Idea post about adding it here
