Viewing path of the current trip

Currently, users can only see paths of completed trips, but you can't view the path of a current trip. If someone is using my car, I'd like to see what roads they are taking to get to their destination and if they are making any extended stops without turning off the car. This feature should be added in both the app and the dashboard.

Is this true on the IOS app?? That's the main reason I ordered the Automatic Pro ... why would it NOT let an authorized user see the path of GPS positions??

I'm only sure this happens on the Android app. Can't speak for iOS. I can see a vehicle's current location as a dot on the map. If the car is moving, the dot will move. But I can't see where the current trip started from and the path that the vehicle took to get to its current location. Only once the trip is completed (car is turned off), then you can go to the trip list and see what path was taken.

On another note, if this feature is added, there should be a timestamp every 15 minutes or so that shows when a vehicle was in a location.

If you like this idea, please up vote this thread.

Yes, AND I used to have an IOS/Web app that showed vehicle speed at the point you hovered the mouse over the trip path ...

Hi Naveed. Correct, Automatic Pro shows the current location of the car as its moving on a map in real time but does not show you the full route until the trip is over. That's because all trips get processed on our server after the fact, using the GPS points that are captured along the way. That processed trip is then sent back to the app as a completed route with all the other data we've added to it from the OBD port and our calculations for MPGs.

Amy, you're statement contradicts itself ... how can Automatic Pro "show the current location" AND be part of a system in which "all trips get processed on our server after the fact?" Clearly you're receiving, processing and plotting the most recent lat/long received from the adapter in something resembling real-time .... what you're NOT doing is connecting one point to the next ... and it would be nice if you did, for a lot of reasons, including those stated by Naveed ...

Hi John. A couple things. First, in the Automatic world, a "trip" is more than just a route. A trip comes with additional data. Second, the final route of the trip is extrapolated from the intermittent GPS points we receive, clean and calculate into a trip. Here's a FAQ with more explanation of this second point.

Amy, I had already assumed that since I've done GPS programming and know the noise problem which can result in some awfully peculiar route paths ... that said, there's nothing stopping you from drawing the path as you go and doing a "clear and clean" at the end of the trip ....

Speaking of which, although your plotted routes are almost always very good, I've had a few klunkers and was wondering if you calculate route distance from lat/long pairs or can that be, and is it, read from the OBD?

I just purchased the Pro to track my children's activities.  I currently have the same type of device installed but am paying $23 per month for their service.  I am disappointed the final trip map on the Pro only shows a complete red line of the entire trip with no time stamps every minute or so which should also indicate the speed at which the vehicle was traveling.  Also, the map is not populated with enough details of the surroundings, do you use Google maps at all?  The trip receipts you can download from the website are just a summary with hardly any detailed information.

The link below is a screen shot of what my current device shows when I log into the application (unable to upload the image to this post as an error occurred "Unprocessable Entity").  It has a choice of 'Current' which shows the live tracking view of only the vehicle like the Pro does but, you can click on the vehicle icon and it will show current speed.  The other choice is 'All Day' which will show where the vehicle has been that current day along with time stamped points every minute or so and they are numbered so you know where they started (number 1), traveled (2 through ?) and stopped.

It's my fault for not thoroughly researching this prior to purchasing the Automatic Pro.  If there is hope a feature like this will be implemented I'll keep the device otherwise, since I am within my 45 day return option, I will be returning the unit.

Thank you for your time!

P.S.  i just read through some past posts, some up to three years ago, requesting this same/similar feature and every response has been there are no plans on implementing any of the features we are suggesting.  Guess I will send that refund request.  I'll leave this post in hopes future readers see it and it helps to make their decision on whether to purchase this unit for the same use I was intending it for.

Agree 100% ... would be a great enhancement ... and while it's a bit of work, it's not rocket science and would help distinguish Automatic and make it a lot easier to justify the purchase

Hello all. I'm going to be very candid with you here.

I hear you and understand the way in which you'd like to use Automatic Pro. Please understand, though, that Pro was not designed to be a teen tracking tool and is not officially marketed as such. That was never its intent. The fact that it's serving this purpose for some folks is fine, but there are a lot of ways in which Automatic Pro can be and is being used.

We launched a teen driving tool, License+, a few years ago that was decidedly not about tracking but rather, about coaching teens to be safer drivers and helping to facilitate communication between the teen and their "coach" (usually a parent) around their driving habits. We found that there were already plenty of teen-tracking solutions on the market and after some extensive user research, we decided to offer a different perspective. You can read more about that here if you're not familiar with License+. We understand, however, that this perspective is not what all parents are looking for.

Adding the additional functionality you'd like to see isn't about it being "rocket science" or not. It's about where that falls in the great pool of requests, demands, business needs and more that need to be considered, weighed and prioritized against our goals.

The feedback we're getting from those of you who are wanting to use Pro to track your teens is certainly illuminating and is being heard but I can't comment on what's likely to be built or not in the future.

Just for the record, I'm not interested in teen tracking at all ... I want to see the route of family and let them see my route ...

While most here likely understand that you have various business interests, I hope you get that, understand or not, customers ultimately only care about their own interests ... and customers pay all of your bills.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, John, and for clarifying what it is you're wanting to do with the product. We take customer input very seriously and have implemented a lot of the feedback and ideas in some fashion that customers have shared and requested over the past few years. It's part of the purpose of providing this community for you all -- a thing we are not obligated to do. However, we also know that we can't build everything every person wants and we can't please everyone all the time -- as much as we'd like to!

I don't know whether or not real-time route tracking will be implemented at some point in the future. It might be. My understanding from the engineers with whom I've had discussions about this is that this would be an expensive piece of functionality for us to provide. It's also not one that many others have requested. I'm not the one who makes the call on product decisions, though. My previous explanation to you was only in response to your assumption that this is an easy thing to implement so we should just do it because a few of you have asked for it.

Just for the record, and again in the spirit of candor, customers don't come close to paying all of our bills. We're a ventured-backed startup and if we relied only on the profits from the sale of a one-time purchase product (granted, with occasional options to buy a new version) that charges no subscription fees yet is expensive to maintain, we would not be in business. This doesn't mean we don't value our customers. We do. But there are a lot of elements at play in making a business like this work.
