should I pay for the total fee again or just for data plans (either directly with you or change SIM?)

Hi. Nothing happens. If you're still using the product at that point it will just continue to work. There is no removable SIM. Please see this FAQ for more info.

How about using phone's connectivity for data upload, like other non 3G models? I think Automatic pro should at least work like a non 3G model after it loses cell service. I know 5 years is long, but I've been using 1st gen dongle for 4 years and I think it would continue to work for many more years. (Please don't kill classic app. :-)

So when you say "it will just continue to work", do you mean that it will use phone's data? What feature would it lose? (perhaps realtime tracking?)

Thanks

Hi Esung,

The adapter will not lose cell service after 5 years. We had to provide a limit for legal purposes, but it will never use the phone's data or lose features as long as it's supported.

Oh? That's an interesting news. So technically 3G service will continue after 5 years but you can only guarantee up for 5 years? (I guess as long as AT&T has 3G network up and running...?)

Also for 'supported' status, which of your products currently have that moniker? Are 1st and 2nd still supported? (Even though classic app is not upgraded anymore.) Also what feature would stop working when product is not supported anymore?

Hi Esung,

The 1st Gen adapter is no longer supported, which you can read about here: https://community.automatic.com/automatic/topics/gen-1-adapter-update. The 2nd Gen  and Pro adapters are supported, but the Automatic Classic app is no longer in development and will not receive any further updates. When a product is no longer supported it means that we can no longer provide troubleshooting assistance, but it still may work. Over time, functionality will decrease and eventually stop.

Thanks for the clarification. I've been using 1st gen for 4 years and just ordered Pro. 1st gen has been working the same way so I'm ok. (expect for flaky connection with app, but I've adapted to that) App says even crash alert is on, so I assume pretty much all original function is still working.

Having said that the 1st gen's support duration was 3 years. Would it be the same with other products? Because that way even Pro's support will expire before 3g connection does.

The 1st Gen adapter was our very first try; the Pro adapter is much more robust and future proof. That said, we don't have specific time frames for when we will drop support for any of our products.

Will there be a problem with service if I purchase a used one? I know an insurance agent who has one his company gave him. Is there a way to determine the generation?

Hi Michael,

We don't recommend purchasing an Automatic adapter from any source other than the three current authorized retailers: Automatic, Amazon, and Best Buy. You can read more here: https://community.automatic.com/automatic/topics/beware-of-unauthorized-retailers. If you purchase one that was part of a special program with an insurance company, it may not work at all.
