NOTE: This FAQ pertains to the 1st & 2nd generation Automatic adapters only.

In order for Automatic to work properly, your phone needs to be present with an active cell phone connection while driving. Basically what happens is that as you're driving, the adapter collects raw data from the car while the app on your phone while the app uses the GPS from your phone (and also the adapter itself if you’re using a 2nd generation adapter) to collect route data. Once the trip ends (ignition off), the raw data from the adapter transfers to your phone and then all of that gets sent to our servers. The driving data and collected GPS data are then correlated to create the trip which then gets sent back to your phone after being processed on our servers.

If, however, you complete a trip and your phone doesn’t connect to the adapter or you forget to bring your phone, Automatic will still display driving stats for these trips (distance, trip cost, and MPGs) after the next trip on which your phone and adapter connect. Because the 1st generation adapter solely relies on your phone for its GPS capabilities, the app will not, however, display route maps for these trips. If, however, you own a 2nd generation adapter, route maps will likely appear as the adapter has its own GPS module.

Please see this FAQ for more details on trips without routes.

If you end a trip in a cell phone dead zone, the adapter will know the trip is over (due to ignition off) but all of that correlating & trip processing won't happen until you're back in cell / internet range. Once you are, after the completion of a subsequent trip, the previous trip should process and be displayed.

We still highly recommend that you drive with your phone present and connected to the app. Why? In addition to ensuring that your driving data will be more complete, the adapter can only cache 8 hours worth of driving data. After which point, the adapter will begin to dump old driving/trip data. If you drive more than 8 hours without connecting to the adapter, this trip data will be lost and will never appear in your trip timeline. You can read more about data dumping by visiting this FAQ. Crash Alert will also not work if your phone isn’t present during a drive.
