Being able to have more tags (or create our own) would be hugely helpful. Tags such as medical, moving and charitable as the IRS has mileage rates for those categories in addition to business. Also, the ability to add notes would be extremely helpful, especially for business purposes. That way I could note what client the business trip was for or which business activity if you have multiple businesses.

Hey James. Thanks for the idea on additional trip tagging options and notes on trips. We are planning to add additional trip tags in the future (as mention in this FAQ), but we don't have an ETA at this time. I'm also going to change this topic from a "Question" to an "Idea" so we can keep track of this feature request more efficiently.

As for trip notes, we don't have any current plans to implement this feature, but that doesn't mean that we won't reconsider it in the future. Here's a link to the related idea topic for trip notes.

Hi Ken. I'm sorry but we don't have an ETA for this. An indication in our community that we like an idea or even that an idea is planned is not a product roadmap commitment. Sometimes there are even features that are partially underway -- and thus the Customer Care & Community team may post in the community that something is in the works -- that then have to be set aside as new, unexpected developments arise. Please see this FAQ about what the statuses on posts mean

We use this community to more efficiently answer questions, solve problems, allow customers to share knowledge and tips with each other and to gather feedback and ideas to inform product development. It's one channel of input among many that the business and product teams use to make decisions about the future of Automatic.

I'm sorry as I know this is not what you were hoping to hear but I want to be as transparent about the process as possible.

Then why have the other employees been misleading us?  "This feature is planned for the next version of Automatic, which our team is currently working on" - a direct quote from the Automatic team.  There are have been numerous updates for the Automatic app but they've only been "bug fixes" and solving "connectivity issues".  Why can't you implement new features?

Adding custom/multiple business tags is an easy feature to implement & should not take this long.  Other apps like Everlance have done it perfectly (the only reason I don't use them as opposed to Automatic is because it wears out my iPhone's battery life).

So do our comments/suggestions go on deaf ears?  This has been a feature requested by numerous Automatic users for over a year, not just me.  All I ask is that you not mislead us into thinking you're actually going to implement our ideas when in actuality you aren't even considering it.  Why is this not a feature that's even in the works?  That would be one of the most useful updates you could possibly add to the Automatic app.  Needless to say I'm a bit frustrated because this has been a feature I've been very much looking forward to as my wife & I have numerous businesses.

Hi Ken. I can understand how it feels like being mislead. Allow me to try to shed some light on this.
At the time a member of the community team shares something like that, it is what they know to be true. We know certain projects are underway and we know what changes and features are slated for those projects. But things can shift, scopes can get changed and minimized along the way. It's the nature of working in a small, agile tech startup. Many things aren't really set in stone until they're actually built AND released. This is why we never promise ETAs or release dates. And, to be honest, when customers wind up upset with us because a thing we thought was going to get delivered doesn't get delivered, it makes me question even communicating anything at all about what might be built. It always seems to come back around to bite us.
We do our best to communicate along the way but with our small team, it's impossible for us to keep tabs on every historical post in this community and everything we've ever said about what's coming or what might be coming. When we do share information, it is always with good intent and from the best of our knowledge at that given time. But we're not in charge of the roadmap. Providing a customer community like this is a risk for all these very reasons. It's imperfect. But my belief is that the positive of providing this community outweigh the downsides. As long as this community is providing value to our users most of the time, I'll fight to keep it going even though it sometimes causes pain for the business and my team.
With regard to custom trip tagging -- I know it's a thing the product team wants to include and there was a time when it was on the list of upcoming planned features. Things shifted and it's not a priority at this moment. I don't have an update on its inclusion. I'm sorry for that.

Amy, I appreciate your transparency. Even though this is a feature that I would like as well, as a developer I understand how priorities change and things get put on the back burner so I'm not as upset as Ken. However, as a suggestion, it might be easier for people to accept the changing priorities if you shed some light on why the decision was made to change them. Obviously, you have competitors and you have to keep some things secret but when possible it's nice to understand why something we were anticipating has been delayed.

Thanks for your understanding, Christopher. I hear you. When I can, I do and will try to shed light on "why" a certain decision was made.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Please Add editable Tags for different Business trips.

I work for two businesses and one has several clients. It would help if there were a capability to make my own labels for clients

Hey Scott,

The ability to add additional/custom tags is a feature we are planning to add down the line.

Thanks!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I need more than PERSONAL or BUSINESS choices for mileage reports. How can I add....

You only allow Pleasure / Business as choices. I have Volunteer mileage and Medical Mileage. How do I add them?

Hi Jim,

Thanks for reaching out.

At this time, it isn't possible to add additional tags at the end of trips. This is a feature that our team is looking to add, but we don't have an ETA on when it will implemented. If we have any updates, we update this thread.

Thanks again!

Hey Jim,

I just wanted to follow up with a possible solution.

While it isn't a feature of the Automatic Core application, one of the third party apps you can integrate with Automatic is TripDots (only supported on iOS):

"Tripdots organizes and manages your driving history to help you maximize expense reimbursements and maximize your refunds from driving. Tripdots allows you to automatically or manually track all your driving. You can apply custom tags to your trips and it will deliver detailed expense reports and driving logs daily, weekly or monthly for your expense reimbursements and deductions.

With Automatic, Tripdots will receive the exact route you took instead of mileage estimates or the shortest route between GPS coordinates, ensuring your expenses are accurate, maximized, and verifiable.

Tripdots is free to track up to 50 trips per month. For unlimited tracking, upgrade plans are available. Visit the website for pricing information."

We hope this helps as a solution :)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Tag other items such as Charity.

When will we be able to tag other items such as charity? I do a lot of charity work and claim that mileage on my taxes. This would be a great enhancement to the product.

Hey Bob,

Thanks for reaching out and chiming in on this addition to the tagging feature in the app.

Our team is currently working on the next version of the app, which will likely include an expansion to the tagging feature—there isn't anything to report though on exactly what this experience will be.

In the meantime, as mentioned above, the TripDotsTripDots integration would be a great fit for you here. For more, please see the response to Jim above.

Thanks!
Having this feature would be a game changer. I purchased Automatic simply because It allowed me to track my milage for tax purposes for my Real Estate Business.
Little did I know I would also need to track milage for another company as well.
Having the ability to track "business" after a trip is simply not enough. Customization needs to be a priority.

Note: I am prone to buy products that fit my needs. If they do not fit my needs I find ones that do. I presume this is common for most consumers.

I would really like to know when this feature will be available. I purchased this instead of going with other solutions such as MileIQ and when I found out I could not differentiate different business and/or non-profit organizations I was not very happy...for the price we all paid, this feature should be included. To instead recommend folks to go and purchase another product (TripDots) that is going to cost us more money is not acceptable. I can't imagine this feature/enhancement would cost that much in development, it has been a year since this post was started...some movement would be nice.

Hi Joshua. I'm sorry, but there is no promise of this feature nor do we ever post ETAs for features as things can always change. I totally understand how convenient it would be to be able to select from multiple tag types. The product team is aware of this request. Unfortunately, implementing this is more complicated than one might imagine due to all the systems the data touches. And any product development has to be balanced with a whole host of varying requests from users as well as business needs and resource realities.

Please see the following FAQ about how we use this community and how to set your expectations about feedback and suggestions that are shared here and the statuses that are set on posts. How is this community used & what do the topic statuses mean?

If by the price you paid, you're referring to the Pro, please keep in mind that it comes with free 3G cellular connection for no hidden fees or subscription. We are one of the only products of its kind to offer this. The purchase price does not cover this cost for us. However, since Pro has launched, we've updated the app with new features and functionality several times already.

It's not a "no" but rather an "I don't know". What I do know is that there are no plans that I'm aware of at the moment. Everyone acknowledges that it would be useful so it could still happen down the road. I just want to be as transparent as possible about what I know right now.
