Does the adapter become active only when the app is synced? Does my teen need to open the app before driving? If another adult driving the vehicle doesn't have the app, will the adapter make the warning noises?

Hi Christopher. Welcome to the community! I see you've selected the 2nd gen adapter as a category for this post, but I'd first like to verify that that's the product you mean as my answer depends on which adapter you're using. I can't find a user account for you, so please see this FAQ to determine which adapter you have and then let me know. We currently only sell the Pro & Lite on our website but the Gen 2 is still sold by Amazon and is used in some of our enterprise partner programs.

Hi, I will be using the adapter offered in the USAA License plus program.  So I'm not sure the exact adapter.

Ok, thanks for the info, Christopher. That is the Gen 2 adapter, then. Your teen will need to first setup the adapter with the Automatic app on their phone with their own Automatic account. Once it's setup, they can then install the License+ app and go through setup with that. During the License+ setup, they'll be invited to add a coach. Please note that the Coach must have a unique email address from the student.

When your teen drives, they'll need to have their phone with the app open (in the background is ok) in the car with them. There are some complexities if you share a car. Here's a FAQ you'll want to take a look at: License+: What happens when the student shares a car with other family members?  If the phone is not in the car, the trips will still be captured on the adapter due to the internal GPS chip and stored there to a point. (up to 8 hours of driving from the past 28 days). Those trips will then sync to the teen's account the next time they've taken a drive with the phone & adapter connected. This is another reason that FAQ above is so important.

Also, here is a list of FAQs about the License+ program that should answer most of your questions: https://community.automatic.com/automatic/topics/license-faqs

If you have further questions about this program, please email the email address provided with your program materials. We have Customer Care agents who specialize in supporting this USAA program but only do that via email. This community if is primarily for our general user product support.

Good luck!
