Why does the Automatic Pro app always need to be running?

Tom,Why does the Automatic Pro app always need to be running? Since the adapter has 3G, it should not need to communicate to the phone at all.

Hi Nathan. What do you mean "why does the app always need to be running"? You're right that the phone is not required for the adapter to record trips, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

(On Android) There is a persistent notification "Awaiting communication from your vehicle...".  In the thread that I had originally replied to, a similar notification was justified to keep the app always on.

So, I guess my original question is: Why does Automatic Pro create this persistent notification? If it is because it needs to be on, why does it need to be on?

Ah, ok. Please see this conversation about that in which one of our Android engineers explains why it's currently there and that they're exploring ways to remove it.
